Hi Everyone,
Thinking about buying my ideal bikepacking / touring bike

features i'm after
1) chainstay mounted disc mount
2) lots of bottle mounts
3) rear rack mounts
4) geared and Alfine compatability if possible
5) fits flat bars

not worried if 26" or 29"

A bit like a salsa Fargo but for flat bars!
or a Genesis Fortitude adventure but with a chainstay mounted disc !

over to you, hope you can help.

On-one slot drop-out 26" or 29"? or one of their swap-out frames?

Might I ask why this is one of your criteria?

cheers for the responses everyone. A Surly troll seems ideal

@druidh .... so you can mount a mechanical disc brake ( eg BB7 ) with a rack easily.

Ah cool. It's worth saying that there are lots of frames where this isn't an issue and racks which get around the problem. Not trying to invalidate your requirement, just trying to increase your chance of getting something suitable.

I was also going to ask if you've considered foregoing a rack altogether in favour of a frame-bag and seatpost-mounted bag by the likes of Porcelain Rocket or Revelate. After years of using a rack, that's the approach I'm now going for.

13L for saddle bag, 11L for handlebar bag. Frame bag would be dependant upon frame size of course. Another 2L for the wee bag on top? Got to be 34-38L capacity overall.

Some more capacity here...

Regarding the cable disc and rack issue

I bought a disc specific rack from Harry halfords and it causes no issues whatsoever....I also have full length mudguards that with a little persuasion, fit fine too

This is on a carrera subway 2

If you are looking for alternatives to a rack and panneirs, don't forget the Great British Tradition of Carradice.

SQR Tour

Their seat packs have 16 litre capacity, enough for credit card touring, add a 5 - 10 litre bar bag and your covered for any lt weight requirements.

I haven't quite bought into the idea of frame bags yet myself for a numer of reasons, so I am going to be using this for my offroad touring.

[img] [/img]

Just need to imagine tent & roll mat on the back, dry bag with waterproofs on front & 3 bottles on the frame & 2 on forks & you are good for multi day unsupported trips.

I have a LHT for road touring, but also planning some trips on the fatty once the weather is good enough to change over to semi slicks. Make a really nice west coast tourer, where you don't have to just look at those nice beaches you are riding past. It's the future.Ken.

Thanks for all the replys guys

@druidh
To explain why the wishlist....I use my bike 2 ways at the moment

1) For road touring with my better half - Using a standard rear rack and 2 x 25L rear panniers, with 2 person tent strapped between them and a front bag.

2) As a pure bikepacking bike, no rack just seatpack, frame bags, 1 man tent strapped to front bars and camelbak

I am using std hydraulic formula RX brakes and the rack ( non disc specific ironically ) fits no problem with suitable spacers

However i bought some Avid BB7 mechanical discs which i would like to fit as they are likely to be more reliable in the field.
This causes issues with the rack.

@ still s8tannorm
Thanks for that. Last night it was a Surly Troll all the way but it going to be lardy ( 2.6 kg for the frame...my full sus frame weighs that ! ) and pricey ( £360 ) so i may give the on-one a try. I can always rivnut a couple of extra sets of bottle bosses into the frame

@ winston_dog
Thanks for that, i wasn't aware that carradice made that sort of thing. Only problem i can see is the weight; 16L capacity for 1000g where as a "Revelate" style seat pack 12L capacity for less than half the weight

Mark

Well, it pains me to say it, but you should have a look at the On Ones. A Scandal 29er would likely be right up your street, although the smallest size (16") only has one set of bottle cage mounts.

How many people have actually had hydro disc brakes fail while in the 'field', how many???

Unless you are going half way round the world for months at a time (like baldysquirt has done btw) and not just for a couple of days. How are bb7s more reliable??

I wouldn't get too hung up on the rack - a disc specific rack will work and I have used a conventional rack and BB5s without issues.

Try a Fargo. The drop bars are a hoot off road and a lot better than you might imagine. My mate Andy just bought an Ogre and it is nice too. Don't get hung up on frame weight - my Fargo rides light if that makes sense?

Cheers

Sanny

What about something like a Ghost TR 5200? It has an Alfine hub, plus discs, a dynamo, rack etc.

I like My IOID for this sort of thing - however it will not take conventional gears and only one bottle cage mount.

Surely the Fargo fails on the Alfine/Rohloff requirement (without the use of a chain tension or Philcentric BB at any rate)?

@rik...maybe i have been unlucky but i have had problems.

Boiled some Hopes down Kirkstone pass that then refused to work well after.

Stored my bike upside down overnight when camping and the one of the brakes refused to work the next morning ( air probably )

had a bit of a crash and strained a hose loosing some fluid. rode down a mountain with only only one brake

I don't envisage going round the world either but i will be carrying a spare gear cable anyway when touring and recon i can bodge a fix on a pair of BB7's if they have a problem. my BB7's dont't work as well as my Formulas but some brakes are better than no brakes.

Bb7s are damned good brakes, and like you say damned easy to repair.

I would suggest the surly ogre, now comes with salsa anything cage mounts, so you can load the hell out of it.

Try a Fargo too. Got a demo here for you... Excellent bike, excellent off road, really handy in the air too.

IIRC you are OK with that sort of post - direct and helpful answer to a question. Looks a nice bike as well

Unless you are going half way round the world for months at a time (like baldysquirt has done btw) and not just for a couple of days. How are bb7s more reliable??

Having done a few multi-day trips with hydraulics, I can testify that BB7s would have been preferrable.

Overheating issues when descending steep technical trails in the highlands whilst towing a trailer come to mind, but worst was the cummulative effect of storing bikes outside, in the rain, whilst perhaps still covered in mud and grit from the day's riding. My hayes were a rubbing, sticky pistoned mess by the end of one particular two week trip, and that was despite cleaning and lubing the pistons before I departed.

Shand - Nice looking bike!

Edit: The Stooshie is even nicer!! Little question/pointer for you though Shand, I've been actively trawling through forums and search engines looking for steel cyclocross/monstercross frames and your site has never come up? The stooshie in particular fits almost all my [s]needs[/s] wants except for the price 🙁 and the abscence of disc mounts

Edit edit: Goddamit, the Stooshie DOES have disc mounts. That is now everything I've been looking for, even the paintjob. Fancy doing one half price for someone to take to B.C. and promote on the Vancouver CX scene? 😉

Haven't read whole thread, so might have been said - but check out Old Man Mountain racks. Very good, expedition quality racks and fitting kits for mtb's with disk brakes, suspension etc.

Absolutely. You pay full price now and we'll give you a posted dated cheque for half the total price. After 6 months, if we've sold 6 bikes off the back of your promotions you can cash the cheque, otherwise we'll cancel it.

Sounds fair? You win, we win. I'll await your CC details.....

🙂
