Bikepacking - anyone use fork cages?

Going to need to carry a bit more gear than usual for a trip in a couple of weeks - leading a group of kids. I'm contemplating some fork cages and bags. I 'could' go panniers and rack but my current kit would all need upgrading and that's more money than I want to spend so looking at options before I do.

Anyone use and like fork cages like the Surly Anything jobbies and bags? The BBB stackrack ones look reasonably cheap and relatively cheerful. I'm sure there are many other options at many other prices.

Fatbike

Got some Salsa Anything cages - Alpkit Xtra bags are good because they have patches to pass the straps through

I'm quite happy with the Planet X Podsacs cage/bag combo I've been using on one fork leg recently (matched with an old Salsa cage and random bag on the other). Liked them well enough that I also fitted DMR hinged clamps to the fork on another bike so I could use them for a three day trip.

I've been considering swopping my fork to a trek 1120 fork with cargo mounts but it's expensive for a few litres and it will only encourage me to carry more stuff and weight.

Just wondering......

how much do you get in the fork bags?

How much does the cage and bags weigh?

Does it effect handling and steering?

Thanks

1) Bulky but light stuff: old style Thermarest one side (I've given up on airbeds), tent the other, plus a few bits, so <1kg each side.

2) Not enough to be a problem.

3) Nope, and so far I haven't ripped them off against anything.

The PX ones come with an attachment kit including hose clips and zip ties so you can try them on forks lacking mounts, although I didn't use them.

I'm about to get some cargo cages. Thinking of sticking with Tailfin. Not the cheapest but great experiences with their other stuff 👍

I’ve got Salsa anything cages that I’ve been hooning down hills for the last 6 months. Great stuff and really solid.

If thinking about cargo cages another one to contemplate is Blackburn cages I have a pair and impressed by them so far and good value I think, got them on an alloy exotic carbon fork with drJon barnacle mounts.

I have Tailfin cages that I use with their 5l cage packs. Expensive, yes, but well made, strong and not too bulky.

Another vote for the Blackburn outpost cages here. These are mk1 (under the bags).

I've got the Blackburn cage as well, although it just gets used to hold cooking gear under the downtube.
