Has anyone used one of these rigid bike boxes to transport a MTB (Hardtail) just hired one and the person I spoke to said that my medium hardtail would fit but i had to remove the forks. looking at the youtube video they dont remove the road bike forks they use.. so any issues? Costly to hire mind but i dont mind paying to protect the bike from the baggage manglers 🙂
Yep, got my heckler in one when we went to Morzine. Forks needed to come off and the bolt through wheel caused a little problem, but there was loads of space. Weighty though.
EDIT: Lyrik forks & the wheels are kept in by skewers attached to the box lid.
I used one for a event in the Cairngorms. Took a HT rockhopper 21" frame. Had to dismantle the forks as well. The bolt thru for the wheels didn't really work as it wasn't long enough. It worked ok. Just don't be tempted to add your extra gear in the box then becomes a weight issue.
Cheers gents. Thought as much.
I bought one a few years ago and have used it to transport road and MTB bikes abroad. I had to remove forks from MTB but not road bike, think that's just the way it is. You can usually pack in helmet, shoes, and a little bit of kit but as above watch the weight. Probably depends on which carrier you're using too.
Plasma TV box will be just as good as well as cheaper and lighter. waterproofing requires 20p worth of PVA.
just go to halfords and get a bike box or search ebay for bike bag, there are loads of results as there aint a category for them so its easy to find a bargain. I got a £150 bag for £20, think it was bought in NZ and used the once to bring a bike over, sold by someone in london who probably had more money than sense
