My dad who is 73 has an old cheap bike which is even by their standards heavy. He is getting maximum 15 flat morayshire miles to the battery . Anyhoo he has looked at some really crap Ebay / Costco type Ebikes with non shimano / Bosch set ups. I suggested buying a half decent older 26" mountain bike and getting someone to fit a kit for him. Has anyone on  here done likewise and could you suggest where to contact. Many thanks .

Have you tried TJConversions in Leith?

half decent spec mid drive bosch/shimano hardtail emtb bikes can be found new from about £1500.
He'd get about 40 flat miles from one. more if fitting commuter tyres

I do have a conversion and its great - unfortunately the kit is no longer made 😉

conversions are never as good as bikes built for electric - even the best of them and the best of the conversions are more expensive than a chap bosch motor bike

For me go to the electric bike shop in trinity / granton and get one of theirs with a bosch or shimano mid motor.  Hub motors are very much second best.

I have Surly Krampus fitted with a Bafang kit. It’s over 3 years old and I’ve used it in all weathers, on and off road. It has a really big (compared to normal ebikes anyway) 2100mAh48v battery. Works fantastic and I’ve done lots of rides over 60 miles on it (it’s very hilly where I live) and it still has loads of power left.
