So, before I order something I'd like to discuss the options of width. The thinner ones will need lots of strips, but shirley the wider ones will be more difficult to apply on bendy bits, tube junctions etc- even with the old hair drier trick. Also, wider could be cut but in practise will it just make creased and crumpled helitaped scissors?

Would there be consensus on a good width, I was thinking 5cm?

Depends on frame type:

Slim steel - narrower
Chunky carbon - wider normally best

I'd go for a wider option and trim it narrower where needed as running adjacent strips is just asking for dirt to get in the little gap and overlapping is generally a bad idea as it never sits right.

Have a look on eBay for 3M paint protection film. Cheaper and easier to apply.
