You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
It looks like I'm going back to work in 2 weeks and the new job is only 9 miles away down the canal and through some woods, so doing man maths I'm going to need another bike instead of sitting in my van on the M25. I'm having a few beers and I've got an itchy trigger finger so I want to order something tonight. Can anyone recomend a bike, preferably steel, thats good for a bit of everything and has rack mounts. Due to wrist and elbow breakages drop bars are out of the question for me. I like the look of the new Karate Monkey, but they seem to be hard to get hold of at the minute. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
Cheers
Jim
I was going to say Planet X Space Chicken with 1x Force....until I read the no drop bars bit. I’d have thought they’re easier on wrists than flat bars tbh - the angle feels more natural than on my mtb riser bars.
I saw one in the plastic on Wednesday night whilst out on a bike ride and I though it looked really nice.
STOOGE! No rack mounts though, but who cares. It’s a drunken purchase!
Do Genesis still do a Croix de fer with a flat bar?
Beer fuelled? Has to be a fat bike.
I have a Croix De Fer but my nephew uses it because it was too painful for my wrist.
Genesis Longitude but with 29er wheels.
I like the Longitude but theres no option to fit suspension forks if i want. but its still in the running
Diverge Evo for teh commuter radnezz!

Marin Pine Mountain?

I've got one. Has lots of mounts and is lush.
Unless you can find a 2016 frame/bike for sale. That will take a tapered 100mm fork. Bet the current model would take an 80mm if you could find a straight steerer.
Ribble Adventure 725.
You can leave a drunken customer services email of random questions for my boy to deal with in the morning 🙂
Or do a video live chat with someone around the showroom now.
Not steel, but a Sonder Broken Road (or even a flat bar Camino) might be a good call.
Subway 2, or perhaps the incoming 2020 Hellcat.
A Planet X Hello Dave is the obvious beer induced purchase.
Those long chain stays, rear brake inside the triangle, long wheelbase and super slackness to make it run straight would also make a it a good and comfortable commuter with a rack well back from your heels I'm sure. Just swap the seat post binder for one you attach the rack to. Or keep it real and British themed with a Brooks B17 titanium and a Carradice Nelson longflap.
Accessorise the ensemble with front and rear cameras, mud huggers and set of Exposure lights.
That Marin's a bit nice.👍
Jimmiboy,I've no idea how to dm on here but my Longitude is up forfor sale this weekend.
It's a 29er FYI
Message if you're interested
I'm guessing the op will wake up later today the new owner of a 1950's tandem or such like.😁
Nah; a three grand Dutch bike made out of steel reclaimed from randoneering frames made no later than 1966 by artisan hipsters in Shoreditch.
The Goldhawk that Kryton mentions looks nice, but it's expensive for a Reynolds 520 frame. No mention of mudguard mount either, which if true is a huge omission for a bike aimed at commuters.
Tthew I think it does, mentioned on this page and in the graphic at the top you can see the mounting hole in the fork I think:

Agree on the Pine Mountain that does look good.
That Goldhawk in grey is very close to my ideal commuter, if only it mentioned it took wider tyres (35mm or wider).
Cheers for the suggestions. I really like the Marin but I still haven’t bought anything. I’ll be back on the piss later doing more “Marin research” Stany I have sent you a message regarding the Longitude

I stand corrected! (but I still think it's a bit expensive)
I’ve got one of these arriving on Monday. Plan to use it for the commute if I ever go back to working from the office.

Edit. Sorry just seen drop bars are out. Ignore me.
SPA Cycles have Surly KM in mid July and they’re cheaper than anyone else. Has anyone ever bought from them?
You like the Karate Monkey, what about Surly's Bridge Club
jimmi, if you start on the sauce now (2pm) and keep going you should be well placed to buy the wrong bike around midnight.
I reckon he'll be buying the Marin at around 10.30pm.👍
If he can find somewhere that is selling one, maybe...
I can't see anywhere.
Yeah, that could be the issue.
Who'd have thought bikes would be the new toilet roll.Lol
@stany sent you a pm, I’m very interested in your longitude
As usual, the Germans have a word for situations like this
Schnapsidee: An impractical idea which seems brilliant when one is drunk.
My limited German speak, translates this as "Schnapps idea"
Nearly bought a Vagabond last night despite saying I didn’t want drop bars
I think once you’ve rode drops for a week you’ll actually not mind them.
Give it two weeks and you’ll probably be asking recommendations for Lycra bibshorts.
I’’d probably go for a space chicken tbh can’t really beat a graaaaavel bike for versatility.
I actually gave my stooge to a mate as bikes are the new flour/bog roll.
It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s since I’ve broken my wrist and elbow they’re not very comfortable for me.I gave my Croix de Fer to my nephew because if it. However I think it’s more to do with the weight on my wrist when I’m in the drops as opposed to my hand position. The bars on the vagabond look very high so most of the weight should be on the saddle.
