Hey all just looking for some advice if possible.
Just had a new cassette and chain fitted by my LBS and went out on its first ride today and my gosh what a noise. My old cassette (E Thirteen TRS 11 Speed) has been replaced with a basic Shimano SLX M7000 as my new wheel's hub has a shimano driver and the old one was Sram. Decided on a new chain too due to it being 18 months old and a bit knackered.
The noise today was unbearable. My old setup was like a ninja - the maount of times I'd accidentally creep up on people because they wouldn't hear me. It was as if the chain was rubbing on something but there's full clearance between the cassette and mech-hanger. Chain alignment seems okay too but I'm no expert. Thought maybe a washer was missed or something on instalment.
Could this all be caused by my chainring (18 months old also)? Is it possible to sound so horrible and loud from just this or could it be something else? Looking for some advice before I fork out on a new one and BB removal tool (Chinch system).
Many thanks 🙂
Also on a side note - and probably a stupid question, my rear wheel is boost, cranks Raceface turbine 170mm. I don't know if they are boost specific cranks (Santa Cruz Nomad) but will I need a boost chainring also? Thanks. When did bikes get so complicated. I remember there being just one standard and I'm not even that old ha. It's rocket science now whenever something needs upgrading.
Yep,chainring will be as worn as everything else you replaced so that will be it.Rollercoaster description is very apt .
Can't help with boost question as I've never owned any of it.
Try putting the bike in a stand and turning the pedals by hand while you listen to it, and locate exactly where the noise is coming from, before you start replacing more parts.
Thanks gravesendgrunt. I thought as much 🙁
Tried to listen earlier when I was cleaning with it in a stand kcr, sadly only becomes apparent when putting force down on the pedals such as cycling uphill.
I thought maybe it's because it's new and needed to bed in but sounds too loud for something like that so edging towards replacing the chainring. AS for the boost, my current chainring just looks like the RF I'm replacing it with - can't seem to see any Race Face boost versions.
