Hi,

I've posted before regarding a friends giant trance SX 2014 size medium. Looking at the size chart, I'm 5'7" with 30" inseam and chart says I should be in small but how difference is it going to make if I go for medium? Is the chart is just a guideline or true sizing?

Here's the spec of the bike

Im same height as you and had a small 2014 Trance. It was my first "proper" mountain bike so I just followed the chart. Even by the standards of the time, it was pretty small. Fun and maneuverable, but a medium would of been a better fit.

If I was going to buy one now though I'd go large as with a short stem even the medium is pretty small. (I've since ridden both the 2014-16 and latest Trance in medium)

Thanks @kiksy, yeah i'd be the same for me it'd be my first proper bike. Not saying my hardtail bizango isn't a proper MTB, just want to move from HT to FS.

This trance already got a short stem I think its 40-50mm, my current HT is small with 40mm stem.

Another question hope people will still see this, would anyone still consider a 5 year old bike (say like this trance) or would people go for newer one? What's your deciding factor? Not very knowledgeable in bikes, but if it's tech I'd know what to pick 😆

@trumpton sorry not going to buy the RRP one as its already been discontinued, a friend priced his at £600 and its been upgraded with new groupset XT which is in mint condition (been ridden twice according to him) and other bits and bobs, the only stock components are Wheels, Forks, rear suspension and dropper post.

The previous gen Trance is a good bike. It's geo is only really outdated by its fairly slack seat angle. The SX has 160mm forks? So around 66 degree head angle? Great for a trail bike. It's also light and well built. I've ridden the newer Trance and there is very little difference.

£600 is a reasonable price, the only question I'd have would be how much use has it had, and have the fork/shock been serviced recently? If its done thousands of hard miles and the suspension needs some love then you can be looking at £200 for that.

@kiksy

Yeah its 140-160mm forks and yeah about right on the head angle too. Based on what I've seen when I went to view the bike, it's really in good condition doesn't look its been used very often or hard, common wears of course like scratches. Yeah according to the owner its been serviced and well looked after, guy who serviced it is also a friend of the owner and I. The only been that hasn't been serviced is the shock apparently.

Regarding the geo, yeah it looks outdated but in terms of looks all geo style of Giant are pretty similar 😆
