Can anyone please recommend me some SPD compatible bike shoes that suit my tiny budget? I've got some old shimano ones I've worn to death. I mainly do traily stuff. The important thing is that they need to be good without a cleat fitted too; I only wear an SPD on my right leg, my left leg I use a flat pedal.

My budget is Church Mouse during a bad patch. I'm a size 46 if that makes any difference at all. Thanks in advance.

Find someone who only wears an spd on their left leg.

Excuse the comment above I don't think he knows the situation entirely.

I reckon second hand might be the way to go.

Have you tried putting a Wanted ad up on the Classifieds bud?

Despite being skint I don't know that I quite want to go second hand, but I appreciate the suggestion. And no offence taken, I've never taken my situation too seriously. (Right leg amputee, through knee)

You'll be fine on here then mate! 😉

Other option is the shoes that Aldi get in for their cycling "events". By all accounts they get pretty good reviews. They are usually about £25 I think. They have them in quite regularly.

Something like these?

Basic SPD trainer, you can leave the cleat off of the left shoe...

I've got an earlier pair of btwin SPD trainers a bit like these and the cleat cutout came covered, requiring a knife to remove it (IIRC).

If you're close to a decathlon I'd go and have a look...

That's some great leads, many thanks. Exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.

Cheers, Jon

What size feet do you have?  I have some skate style spd shoes that would work without cleats as well in a size 8 that are too small for me that you could have for pennies

46 is roughly UK 11 I think

Something like the Specialized Cadets that a few of us bought from Rutland before Xmas for £15 would do the trick outside chilly periods, the SPD cleat mount needs a blade to cut the seal to expose the cleat pontoons.

I've a pair of brand spanking new scott skate style spds in the garage i bought on offer for when my then shoes failed, think they were £28 delivered.

I've just bought a set of 5 tens as i forgot all about the scott ones so I'd be happy to part with them [scott ones] at cost if that works. I'd need to check sizing when i get home though as I'm variously a 45/46.

Drop me your email by pm if interested and I'll get photos/sizes etc when home.

Ive had some dreadful looking "camo" dhb SPD shoes, which seem well made and are comfy. Think they are circa £35 at wiggle.

Just don't look down.

My cycling shirt and padded shorts are MuddyFox, bought at Sports Direct. I fall off a lot so something cheap and disposable works for me!

I've bought a pair of the BTwin shoes suggested from Decathalon; even with new cleats it came in under £35 but over £30 so I got free shipping.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll let you know how they go. I've got high hopes.

Thank you,

Jon

So to report back, the BTwin SPD trainers I bought were really cracking value. They didn't come in a box (few pennies saved I guess) but they were a good fit, good solid sole but still flexible to walk in (popping home from the trail I popped into the supermarket still covered in mud and crud and forgot I was wearing them even with a cleat fitted).

So all in all a great suggestion, thanks to all who helped.
