Chaps,
Can I ask what you'd quote for a LH STI shifter install and bar re-tape on an internally-cabled frame, if the replacement new shifter was supplied? Ideally time X rate.
Had what I thought was a very full amount quoted and wondering whether it was a "workshop's busy, so pitch it high to discourage" or are hourly rates now on a par with car main dealers?
In the shop I'd charge you either a gear service (£20) or half a gear service plus half the bar taping charge (£16) if you bargained hard. 🙂
At home a packet of choccy Hobnobs would suffice.
🙂
Plus parts obviously. It's worth changing all the cable inners and outers whilst you're in there, but that should come with the shifter if it's new and not OEM stuff in a plastic bag....
Thanks, Peter- that's what I was expecting, rather than 1.25 h @ £99 p.h.
£35-50 I'd say but some internal routed frames are fine and some are a pain. Relatively easy job that can suddenly stretch out.
£30-50 in my shop probably.
£30 for standard gear service (new cables etc) plus a bit extra for the taping and extra time for cable routing if it was a real pain.
I charge around £60 p.h. but I don't do standard repairs like that any more...
Why don't you try it yourself. I assume that the old cable is still in place? All you need is an allan key and some decent cable cutters. Sometimes getting the cable through the internal bottom bracket guide can be tough and skillz is needed. I failed on my Propel and the Giant shop sorted me on a groupset swap. But that was a first time. Try is first.
Bar taping is a skill everyone should acquire.
It's not really a fair comparison to compare to car dealers prices, that's like me saying Ben's pph up there ^^^ is more expensive than GE would charge to overhaul an engine from a 767 frinstance.
Pointless really.
£123.75 to fit a shifter! 😯
Blimey.
I made the comparison to car dealers in that they have workshops and technicians/mechanics, and I have experience of taking cars to them. With my (now-departed) Land Rover, I could choose the indie at £60 p.h. or the franchise dealer at £100, so what I was being quoted for bike work was pretty equivalent.
If Saturday is as rainy as currently forecast, then it's YouTube and patience as I give it a go. I'd already swapped the gear cable, so I'm ok with 1/2 the routing element of the job.
