Does anyone know of any companies or folks that do frame re-sprays for a reasonable price? A quick search round on the internet seems to price this at £100+.

Alternatively does anyone have any tips on home re-spray jobs?

Whereabouts are you? Triple S in Bingley did a great job on my Heckler. I went for the costly candy version, but the basic colours we well priced.

EDIT: that was a powder coating...

Generally it is cheaper to get a frame powder coated.

Have a look in the yellow pages, there will be one near you. Powder coating will look much better than a home respray. Typically it will cost about £50 depending on what exactly you want and how complicated the job is.

Powder coating or re-spray is fine either way, I've got a Cotic BFe frame to build up that needs a bit of TLC so thought I'd try and get it done properly. Does it need to be a bike specific powder coater or will any powder coating company be able to do it?

I was told by Jungle bikes getting my BLT powder coated might damage the frame due to the high heat involved in powder coating. Not sure if this true, but thought I would mention it. They recommended Argos Racing Cycles which ended up being pricey and it scratched on the first ride out!

IT can be any powder coater, if they've done bikes before then better, they should be able to advise on risks etc. I've never known anyone have problems but I guess it could happen. The temperatures are about 220°C. It wasn't an issue with me because I was doing a steel frame just like you are. Know plenty of aluminium ones that have been done too.

Use the search on here.

I can recommend someone in Newcastle upon Tyne.

i started a thread like this a while back and a seeming knowledgeable gent mentioned that if a frame is sprayed more than once you risk affecting the properties of the frame especially if the tubing was heat treated. It was a steel hardtail we were talking about but certainly worth mentioning i think. He informed me that Dave Yates wouldnt spray his frame as it had been done once already.

Spraying a frame does not cause any damage that's just impossible! If you mean powder coating then maybe there is some sense in that due to the way the powder works it as to be done under a hot temperature. Most frames its not going to make no difference, or very little in real works terms. Some frames then maybe more caution is advisable with powder coat. I have a Kona Kula Scandium frame and I have heard Scandium is not a good thing to have heated up as due to how the alloy is formed. I'm just going to be polishing this frame up so its raw silver. I would get it sprayed with two pack and then lacquered but the cost is just not economical. As said above looking at a ton plus for a basic spray up.

The only problem I have found with powder coating in the past is that once it does get chipped it can come off easy around that area not long after. Its also hard to touch up as its quite thick. If you are not tight like me and the frame is a keeper I would have the frame etched with etching primer, then two pack sprayed and then apply your decals and have it two pack lacquered on top. That will be the longest lasting finish providing you get a good person to do it of course!

Powdercoat gives a great finish.. and if applied properley should not peel off.. peel off is bad prep

Armourtex in London is good - see prices:

http://www.armourtexltd.co.uk/cycles.html

steel frame and forks from £60, alloy frame from £65

Do Armourtex do posting, or is it purely dropping your frame off at the site and picking it up again a few days later?

the place in newcastle is

http://www.bettablast.co.uk

They have done plenty of frames for us at midaircrisis. Mine cost me about £50 but was a special colour and included an extra clearcoat as the base coat is realively low gloss.

Standard Ral colours without the extra gloss clearcoat were £40 IIRC although it was a while ago. Everything masked off and the finish is great. Knows his stuff so no orange peel etc. which is normally an application error.

You (or at least I) would struggle to compare a generic powdercoat to a generic paint (1k or 2k) without knowing the chemistry, formulation, intended use, surface prep, age of the coating etc. I've worked with a whole range of paint systems and the properties vary massively. I'm aware that powdercoatings also vary.

My frame has been fine for the last 3 years of (ab)use so powdercoating has been ok for me.
