After some bike rack advice. My old man gave me a bike rack which allow the bikes to be stored on a rail with an arm to secure the bike - similar to a tow bar rack but it's a hatchback mount.
So.. it's crap, heavy and makes it sound as if my boot is about to fall off but worst of all I can';t fit under the barrier without ripping the bike off as it sits too high.
Next problem I have is an epic so I have an awkward mounting so a conventional bike rack is no good as I don't want to scratch the shock.
I'm contemplating a Saris Solo as it's easy enough to install and I should be able to mount the frame and bypass the shock. Anyone got any thoughts on this rack or go any other suggestions?
any other suggestions?
Put the bike IN the car.
I have a 206! The epic is quite long so only just fits in there with the wheels and seatpost removed. I don't like having the bike in the car over the winter as it just gets shitty
I really like the Thule 591. I've got slotted aerobars and the racks are a sinch to get on and off. Muddy bikes are on in no time. Don't think the locks are up to much though so never leave bike on there unattended.
no good with overhead barriers though.
Can you pick up a tow bar for the 206 and a get a tow bar rack? The fog light is in a silly position though isn't it?
edit: just looked and fog light is high enough to get over the tow ball. New ones seem to be about £76 + rack etc. 2nd hand ones probably not very common.
WTF? you've got a 206, its already shitty!
Boot mounted racks are generally not that great for long term usage. Get a towbar or roofrack one, or better still put it in the car unless you want it sprayed with road salt on the drive home in winter.

I challenge you kind sir to dual.
Can't knock the French Ferrari! 🙄
I don't want to get a tow bar fitted as I don't know how long I will have the car for. The bike is generally in the car for long journeys etc but for the short evening rides etc I don't want to waste riding time by dismantling/assembling the bike. Going off the Saris Solo as I've read the reviews and it needs extra straps which by the time you've bought those you may as well buy a better rack.
Any rack which is so low as to not raise the height of the bike above the car will result in your lights being obscured and thus illegal.
Put a big plastic sheet in the back of the car, whip the wheels off (you have Q/R of some sort?) and you're done.
Thule Clip-On (9104) is rock solid and doesn't use any webbing straps.
You will probably need to get lightboard though.
They do a high version too (9105) which may fit your car but it's twice the price. I think there may be thread on here somewhere where there was a catastrophic failure of the high version though 🙁
That Thule has similar restraint to mine. It's better though as the tangs that clip onto the car are longer. Mine are quite stubby and therefore make me nervous
I've a 3-bike Saris rack. Works well on a saloon and is very adaptable taking all manner of bikes, although not always fastened as the maker intended...
Just chuck it in the back 🙂 tow bar new for about £90 relatively easy diy fit.
Dosnt obstruct the fog light if you want to fit electrics its a little more involved but not beyond diy.
Saris solo will not fit a Mazda 6 hatch back the straps are to short as I found out this week.
Iv got a roof mount and a halfords rear high mount.....I use the halfords rack for local ish rides...if we are going on trips were I need boot space I usetheroof mount.
