Any advice about fitting a bike rack (tow bar or straps) to an MX5 or a Z4? Is this a make-or-break thing in choosing between them?
Thanks

No direct experience, but I have seen:-

A bike in the back of a Z4 coupe. Looked a pretty tight fit mind (both wheels off, seat out, don't know if the bars had to come off too.

MX5 - the way I've seen it done is to use the boot mounted luggage rack then bodge a front QR style roofrack onto it. Spin the bars round 180° to shorten the wheelbase of the bike and away you go. Wheel goes in the boot I think.

I have a Z4 coupe and been told that a Saris bones will fit, but not tried it as have another car we use all the time for cycle trips. I did try the single bike Saris mount but it didn't fit and TBH was a piece of junk anyway.

If you have a look on the Z4 forum there are some discussions on bike racks.

I think the mx-5 is a nicer car compared to the Z4 roadster (though like the look of the Z4 coupe (sahme they have never made a mx-5 coupe really)

mazda service costs are reasonable as well.

I have a Z4 and use a standard Saris rack, not the Bones.

It's okay but I don't think I would put 2 "heavy" MTBs on it.

the mx-5 bootlid is quite lightweight - think that was why i liked the idea of the rack that fits to the frankenbolts, though imagine makes getting into the boot a pain

How about fitting a tow bar? There's a scruffy mk1 MX-5 local to me that has one although I have no idea what the chap tows with it.

I used a Saris Bones 2 on the wife's old MX5 with no trouble at all. Only thing I did was cut an innertube up and use it to cushion the car from the bikerack straps.
It also worked on my old MR2 and a test-fit suggests it'll work on the RX7, so I see no reason it wouldn't go on a Z4.

I've got an MX5 and the Saris bones fits. I'd only ever put one bike on it though and also add some padding to the legs as it sits on the bumper under the number plate.

4 wheels/tyres and a small toolkit for track days?

I have a Z4 coupe and use a Saris Bones on it. It can fit one bike on it fine, two requires the wheels to come off the most inbound bike. The Bones doesn't suit certain frames so you need to take that in to consideration.

The below is a possibility

Used a Saris Bones 3 on my wife's MX5 (the new shape folding hardtop version). It was fine with 2 hardtails on it, not so good with full sussers as you felt the boot was about to get wrenched off.

Biggest problem you've got is that the bikes obscure the lights & reg plate; I used to tie a spare reg plate to the outer bike & never got pulled on the lights, but I think I was probably just lucky.

And whilst they're good fun cars, there's no way I'd go back to having it as the only car. You'll soon realise how impractical they are!
