Hi a mate of mine is after a 3 bike tow bar rack. It will not be used to many times so after a secondhand one but struggling to find one at a decent price (dragons teeth) so was thinking of buying a 4 bike and cutting it down to three 3 bike & reconnecting the number plate & lights just wondered if anyone as done this cheers for any help...
Our 4 bike Thule is a 3 bike with a +1 that simply unscrews.
Why not just leave it as a 4-bike?
Mountain Bikes are wider than they used to be. Bars and boost hubs etc. The extra space in a bike rack will be useful.
As above many 4 bikes are actually 3 bike with a plus 1 bolted on.

Agree heartily on the first bit, but not the second bit unless you can actually move the rails. Otherwise you'll still have at least two bikes jammed up against each other.

If you go 1011, you can do 101/ with three bikes, giving you more room.
Not helpful to the OP, but sharing the views on there being only *just * enough room on them for modern bikes (having bought one recently, and finding that it's a pain to get 4 bikes onto a 4 bike rack!) ...
