Anybody done this, any experiences you'd like to share?

Thinking London Luton to Slovenia

Looks like a good price at £22 each way and a full 32kg allowance

Do they check inside the bad for clothes etc?

I flew that route with wizzair in September.
Found them fine, you know you're flying with a budget airline but they are fine.
Stuffed clothes and pads in bike bag and was within the limit and no checks made.
The worst thing about the trip was flying from luton, which is the uk's worst airport, might be alright when it's finished I suppose.
Also, if you are going with ride Slovenia, make sure it's the right trip for you. It really wasn't for me (although some people there had a great time). Really technical riding, long journeys to the ride sites each day and all a bit disorganised with too few staff.

I worked all summer at Ride Slovenia and a lot of folk used WizzAir to fly out with no problems all summer! We only had two lost bikes the whole time but that was with another airline with people coming from Paris, don't remember who ti was though.

Thanks for the update.

The times of the flights look a lot better than the equivalent from easyjet.

Not going with a mtb holiday company we would be going on our own cycle touring through the mountains.

I've flown with them and they were ok. Really hot on checking luggage sizes etc, especially on the return flight.

We've flown Whizzair (Luton - Bucharest) a few times, cheap, but when I took a bike out there for my daughter we flew BA.
They'd probably be fine but I wasn't prepared to risk it.

Do arlines have their own baggage handlers? I would have thought that any mistreatment concerns should be airport-based rather than airline.

I thought this was the case, your bike doesn't even go through the airlines check in desk anyway. Straight to oversize luggage counter, then airport staff process it and take it to the plane. Nothing to do with the airline.

Rik, aside from the baggage questions I would reccommend going to cycle up Logarska Dolina and also over the Vrsic pass (if you have the legs for it) then down the other side in the Soca valley and also have a look at the gorge near bled just google 'vintgar Bled'.

You probably have already done your research though and knew that already but I loved those places so thought I would suggest it.

It general but...
The check in staff are representing the airlines, they can and will get you to weight the bike bag on their desk scales then send you to oversize (the weight goes on your bag tag and I assume is used to get plane weight right)

The oversize desk then process it and your in with the airport handling staff.

They could ask you what's in the bag and check but nobody does. You won't get it on the plane if it's over 32kg full stop.
