Ok so flying to Spain tomorrow and my bike is packed. Just realized I haven't let the air out of the tyres. Will it explode?

Tyres, forks and shocks will all be fine. 🙂

Well it'll be travelling in the same space as any dogs/cats/whatevers that are travelling, so if things are going to explode it'll make a right mess!

Just remember the correct answer if they ask you.

"has the pilot let his down?" Is not the best response.

Have you checked with your airline about the wheel size? Some airline holds can't take a 29er.

Worth a call, I'd say.

It's to do with cabin depressurisation innit? The hold is supposed to be pressurised, but like anything that can fail. That would effectively increase your tyre pressure (relative to the outside) by 1 atm = 1 bar = 14psi. If your tyres are going to blow off the rims at +14psi then you should probably let 14psi out.

I've never worried about it myself.

Ironically, some now won't accept 26" Wheels, either. 😉

If it does you'll have far bigger worries than your tyres exploding.

If you're flying into space. IIRC the outside pressure at 30000ft is about 4.5psi, so you'd only have 10psi difference to worry about. If you were still worrying about your tyres when the hold depressurised (which would suggest your priorities are wrong!)

Will the bike be on a conveyor belt?

Quite.

If the cabin depressurizes, do you automatically win a goat and not a racecar?

an aircraft is a big pressurised tube. anything inside the tube is pressurised.

therefore, yes, your tyres will explode. but at least you'll be on air crash investigators.

The official line is yes, you should. However, it will be fine.

but you have just given me an idea. We should fill planes with Stans and if there is any leaks they will seal up. 8)
