You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi
I have been biking for 4 years now and struggle to find a good bike mechanic in Sheffield. In fact I have had some really bad experiences from one lbs in particular!
I only want to do the most basic of maintenance myself and am happy to pay someone - either bike shop or private.
Any reccomends???
Thx
Justridingalong.co.uk in Oughtibridge are good.
Quite small but very helpful.
Ms TPT would recommend the Butterworth of Abbeydale Road.
I have had the odd job done well at the nearby Edinburgh Bike Co-Op.
The new Evans has some 50% off servicing opening offers - though they do not have a cycle rack at the front or the back - it may be worth cultivating their shiny new mechanicking staff.
i've had great experiences with Langsett, tony butterworth, edinburgh co-op, 18 bikes (a bit of a trek, but worth it for the woodbine flapjack).
friends of mine have had nice words to say about the bike tree.
Bike rehab on Wellington street in the city centre. www.bikerehab.co.uk
bikerehab seconded if you commute or live near town, otherwise Biketree up abbeydale
Recycle Bikes just off Chesterfield Road are excellent 🙂

Bike rehab
Hi Thx all
I have just taken it in to Bike rehab
Wise choice, Alex is a great guy
where have you been going to previously? mothercare?!!!
there are lots of good mechanics in sheffield!
Agree with hibb - lots of options - my personal preference is to avoid the place with 2 J's, an A, 2 E's an M and an S in their name... far too long resting on their laurels and treating customers like sh*t.
First two recommendations in order that I'd use them, followed by what else I know....
Bike Tree - all great guys and gals, know their stuff, and the most 'comfortable' shop i know - made for hanging round in. Spencer is an ace mechanic and all round top bloke
18bikes are also excellent - bought my Cotic from them, they also bled my Reverb since I kept mucking it up, and have nothing but praise for them, start to finish a pleasure to deal with. Going back for wheels tomorrow and I trust them as much as I'd trust any shop tbh
If you're anywhere near Chesterfield, a lot of my mates swear by Rob at Igloo bikes - a tiny shop, rammed with good kit, and run by Rob and his wife who are lovely people - they deserve support IMO, a few of my pals won't go anywhere else for wheels or the more complex jobs... Personally I thought him very expensive and had to bolt up my own caliper.
I live in Dronfield and am lucky to have Vernon Barker on the doorstep - for anyone who knows the road to Unstone, it's a little workshop beneath the betting shop / lawnmower place, just past the Sidings pub (now called the Dronfield Arms I think). There's Vernon, who builds custom road / touring frames in one room, and Dave who does mechanics... TBH I haven't used them as much as I think I should, partly because they aren't open every day, and partly because I can't fondle/buy stuff when I'm there. But I was able to get a few Avid washers there during my lunch break working from home today, which is utterly priceless.
EBC - no experience, although all the guys in there are super friendly and I'm always glad I went in to buy tyres etc.
Evans - Dom is a mechanic there, a mate of mine, and he's well worth seeking out.
hibb - sarcastic not very useful post.
mangoletse - you are bang on with your cryptic guess - I have some pretty good horror stories regarding their service dept - truly shocking.
I have also tried a number of others with only a fair/middling service.
Many of the places you reccomend are a bit far away for me.
I tried Bike tree when it first opened (they are v friendly) but the service was slow as they struggled to get parts (Trek) as has been the case from a number of shops. I spoke in length to Trek on Thursday and they will only release parts to authorized dealers.
Anyway - took my bike to Bike rehab yesterday and by the end of day had a comprehensive breakdown of the problems and parts needed to fix the bike. If the bike does infact work, I will have found the person I am looking for.
bike rehab will pick up and drop off your bike for you too
I still don't get why people don't do the work themselves. It's honestly not difficult, yes some of the tools are a little specialised but with the exception of a wheel truing jig and a dishing stick (which a few of us bought together and then share), there's little you need outside a reasonable toolkit.
time mainly for me nick.
I still don't get why people don't do the work themselves
I am sure I could learn to do it myself.
I don’t want to learn because:
I would rather spend the time doing other things.
I can earn more money working if I choose than I pay out.
I have no patience to do it
I don’t like oil down my nails and my knuckles skinned.
I am happy paying and have ample funds to do so. But having said that – only happy if the job is done correctly.
And you've even less of that now pook! Fair enough Andy, I do find a certain satisfaction in doing myself and being a properly tight Yorkshireman I won't pay for owt I can do.
Recycle bikes in Heeley do courses to allow you to learn and also run a workshop with very reasonable rates.
Butterworths are meant to be superb.
When it comes to mechanics avoid anywhere with a laminated floor and neon signs.
Eighteen are good but Mark at www.expertbikerepair.co.uk is worth a look.
