Any thoughts / comments on bike marking and registering with the likes of Immobilise and bikeregister?
Anyone use them, any reports of recovering kit?
Anyone?
TBH I hadn't heard of either service and have just googled them, not exactly well promoted IMO...
But they seem like a good enough idea, registering valuable items details ready for the Rozzers ahead of any potential theft, making it easier for them to identify it should it turn up, a very good idea but doesn't do much to prevent theft in the first place...
The biggest problem (IMO) is that a bike is nothing like as easy as a Car to register and track, aside from a unique frame number, there's not much you can do to verify the source of most parts on the 2nd hand market.
A High value bike is easily broken down and flogged off as, essentially un-traceable, parts.
I've said it before a canny, organised thief (or thieves) would simply discard the frame and flog the parts online to make a pretty reasonable sum, which would probably also help him to identify his next potential set of victims via buyer's postal addresses, a relatively risk free.
The used bike parts market is wide open for even slightly organised criminals to exploit IMO.
I see no harm in using either service, but they won't prevent your bike being stolen, and I'm quite doubtful it will massively increase the chances of recovery, but it couldn't hurt...
