Today I read an article in Bikes etc which came out with a number of unclear/incorrect (but fashionable) statments about wide road tyres.
Then in RCUK I read about groupsets, where they herald current groupsets as now having replacable chainrings, and state the sti came in in 1990.
Can't these clowns even get the basics right?
When was the first sti?
I know it's only Wikilinky, but....
In late 1989, Shimano introduced their "Rapidfire" shifting for mountain bikes. This brought indexed shifting to the handlebars - something previously only available on downtube shifters or thumb shifters. This mechanism operates like a ratchet, the larger lever applying tension to the gear cable, the smaller one incrementally releasing it. The Rapidfire mechanism was subsequently adapted to be used in STI levers. In 1990, Shimano introduced their STI shifting levers for road bicycles, which completely integrated the brake lever and shifter. It also redesigned the brake "hoods" where riders commonly rest their hands. This new design worked like a normal brake lever in the longtitudinal plane, but also allowed the rider to shift to a larger cog by pushing the lever so that it pivots laterally. Behind the brake lever, there is a smaller lever that shifts to a smaller cog when pushed towards the inside.
I thought the first sti was Dura Ace 7400 from the '91 model year so probably around in '90. When did you think it was Al?
So RCUK are correct then?
Hmm.. 2 out of 10. I'm feeling generous.
Seems RCUK are correct on that one point Simon, open the champagne.
Still talking shite on various others...
In my defence I remember seeing them on the pro tours in 89.

SRAM Wireless has been seen on the pro tour for a couple of years now, but no one would say it's been released to the market.
OK OK OK you got one on me.
Why are these articles so poor?
Replaceable chainrings a reference to a single BCD? They've always been replaceable but needed to be swapped for compact gearing. Not any more.
Laziness.
says the man who uses a triple.
Brakes howisthat relevant?
What did they say about tyres?
Some shite!

What specific statements were made about wider road tyres then? And how were they "Fashionable"?
