Hi

I have insured my bikes under my home insurance. I double checked with them when I took it out and it covers accidental damage.

So here’s the question, I was out riding yesterday and my hangar snapped, which got the rear mech into the wheel damaging spokes then got the rear leach into the chain stay damaging the carbon. There’s not a hole there but you can see that both inner and outer layers of carbon are damaged.

Would anyone know if this is accidental damage in the eyes of insurance? I haven’t called them up yet but will do Monday when I am with the bike and have time.

Thanks in advance

Depends what caused the mech hanger to snap.

I'd say accidental damage suggests some sort of outside cause - dropping it or in my recent case, colluding with something and breaking the frame.

If the hanger just failed, I'm not sure the resulting damage would be covered, or possibly the subsequent damage might be but not the hanger snapping.

It's 20 years since I left insurance so I may be out of touch.

Thanks. Yeah, it does feel like a tough one. I guess the best thing is to speak to them and see what they say. I know they won’t be keen to pay up but on the other hand I pay for accidental damage which is quite a broad subject.

That would typically fall under accidental damage, sounds like a very common claim.

Reckon you need to tread carefully here. Yes, you have accidental damage cover but have you actually read through the T&C's thoroughly? Tend to agree with MoreCash and it really can be a play on words.

You may also need to consider that your annual premium could well rise, also you'll obviously have an excess of several hundred pounds. How much will the damage be then?

Personally I'd rather pay up and use insurance for when the need is greater and the loss is genuine.

Well, the bike would be 7k to buy new. Just the frame is about 2.5k.
I’d be happy with either being replaced.
I got the bike off eBay for a lot less but insured it as I knew that I wouldn’t be able to replace it for what I bought it for. I did tell them all this so I haven’t hidden that it was second hand and said what I paid and that I want old for new so covered all that.
I think I just need to ask and see what they say 🙂

Is the frame cracked? Has it been inspected professionally?
