As above really.

Who do you use?

What made them stand out?

How much does it cost?

Benifits from using them? Discounts from shops etc?

Many Thanks

Phil

Sainsburys premium cover

You specified the bikes on that? The standard limit appears to be £1000. £26 is the premium for adding a bike?

I added mine to my house insurance (AA), 2 bikes insured for a total of around 4k, added about £90 to the policy, all the dedicated bike insurers wanted a minimum of £260 going up to over £400.

Sorry for slight hijack, but can anyone recommend a single bike insurer?

I'm insured with Green Insurance who I would recommend - they allowed me to list 6 bikes up to about £3-grand on the main policy with no quibble.

But when I asked to add a bike with a replacement value of £6.5k, they told me that not only would they not insure it, but they wanted to withdraw my current cover as I had such a "high risk" item kept in my home!!

So, give Green Insurance a buzz, but if anyone has any suggestions for a decent insurer for one bike, European cover etc, please add your thoughts...

😀

Is that a total of £3000 of bikes, or up to £3000 per bike? If the latter that is at least enough to cover all but one of mine, though I'm not sure if they'd also not insure a £4000 bike. Though in any case, the unspecified bike limit is £750, so presumably you had to specify those?

I'm supposed to be renewing ours today, so just going through this again, but it is a real pain as nobody seems to insure bikes over £1000 or £1500 (not even the companies others are mentioning) without speaking to them. Have just tried Sainsburys, but that has a £1000 limit and won't let me specify a £2000 bike online as you can only specify items over £2000 (the limit for things other than bikes) 🙄

I'm with Hiscox.. Insurance limit away from home is 2.5k per item (bike) unless listed, but otherwise no restrictions up to value of contents.

There were 2 at £3k, 2 at £2k and a couple at £1500. The premium isn't ridiculous either, but I don't know what the bikes add to it as it was my first policy with them.

The cover is very comprehensive too, European travel etc... The usual security stipulations.

nobody seems to insure bikes over £1000 or £1500 (not even the companies others are mentioning) without speaking to them.

Just ring them up, they're very helpful. They'll only insure roadbikes with proper man's gears though, so you might have to lie and say you ride a 53-tooth chainring... 😉

Well Green insurance did at least let me specify bikes online. Though their quote is over £1000 😯

I'd specified 4 bikes, £4000, 2 at £3000 and £2000 - removing them the premium dropped by £800. This isn't going to be easy...

The AA

...tried changing the bikes to just 3 £2000 ones, and the quote is still over £800. I think I can safely rule out Green Insurance. I didn't specify gear ratios.

Do you mind telling me what your premium was?

Oh I so hate having to do all this again - was so much easier with M&S (I guess I should just phone them and ask about specifying bikes...)

Very much dependent on where you live

Yeah, but I live somewhere which is safe enough that I leave my (uninsured) expensive kayaks unlocked in full view outside, sometimes forget to lock my car overnight, often leave bikes lying around on the drive, and the posty is happy to leave parcels on the doorstep. Hence Shibbo's £300 quote for the company who were quoting me over £800 for less value of bikes suggests I'm either doing something wrong, or all policies with bikes have now got silly.

Now off to try the AA...

DALES RIDER

with the AA can you name cycles over a certain amount adding them as a specific item?

when you click to add personal belongings worth more etc, it doesnt name cycles in the list of valuables?

seems cheap though!

I use cycleguard, as my home insurer wouldn't cover the bikes, tbh my home insurance is heavily discounted so cheaper to do it this way, although next year will see if i can get a better deal.

AA was looking good, apart from "If your claim is for loss or damage to household linen, clothing or pedal cycles, we will take off an amount for wear and tear" - which is concerning given that two of my expensive bikes are over 15 years old, yet would still cost lots to replace - it's not like they're worn out. It seems particularly odd that applies to bicycles and not for instance computers which devalue faster. I would call and ask what their terms are on wear and tear, but then when I tried to add all my bikes as specified items I ran up against "The total value of all items must not be over £10,000. Please amend the values".

aracer - when you add it as specified on personal belongings, it says make sure the type of item you are insuring seperately is in the list below, which it doesnt mention a push cycle, or bicycle?

so not sure even if it would be covered anyways?

you can manually type what you want in the list and name the price, but its defo not listed in the list naming what type of item it is?

Just renewed home contents with the AA and the added global cover for £6k of specified bikes plus home cover for £3k of shed content in addition to bikes for a £40 increase on my premium.

...it gets worse with AA "The most we will pay for any one claim for loss or damage to contents contained in outbuildings at the
property or your domestic garages is £3,000 in total." - you are aware of that, Dales_rider?

Aaaaaaaagh - have just been on the phone for an hour through various brokers, and the only thing I ended up with they wanted me to specify all bicycles over £250. At which point my head just starts spinning as I've got to specify 8 or 9 bikes including mini-aracer's Islabike. Not only that, but as I pointed out to the chap on the phone I have a unicycle worth £300 and he probably doesn't even have a category for that!

Right - am going to do what I should have to start with and phone M&S to see how much adding a few specified bikes costs.

Yes, I wont say on an open forum how much my bikes are worth however I dont keep them in an outbuilding, they are all in the house. My garage doesnt have a door so is open to anyone to help themselves to the contents.

Ah well, mine are in a locked garage (door currently open as I've been in trying to specify "cheap" bikes).

Have been on the phone with M&S and I think I'm going with them - added the expensive bikes and by increasing the excesses, it's only £70 more expensive.

Do they offer europe-wide cover Aracer? What value will they insure up to?

...just waiting for AA underwriter to ring me back...

M&S? Cover is anywhere in the world. No idea of the ultimate limit - I just got a quote for adding one £4000 bike and two £3000 ones, I suspect you could go a lot higher (unlike the broker I spoke to earlier who thought a total of £15,000 of bikes was a ridiculous amount - I did think about asking how much his car was worth).

When I look again at what's covered, my M&S renewal does look pretty good compared to the alternatives.

Looks like I'll be cancelling my Green Insurance a couple of months early and switching to M&S or AA...

The cheapest I could get single bike cover was with Velosure: £420 for £6000 cover... 😮

...thought it is possible you don't get quite such good terms with M&S as a new customer.

AA cover looks like its limited to £1000 for any theft from vehicle, irrespective of any specified items insurance.

Hiscox was my insurer before m&s, but the premiums started to get quite hefty, and it doesn't look like their cover is as good as m&s. Looks like m&s might still be the safest, though not cheapest, option.

1. Figure out how much you'd be willing to spend on insuring your bikes

2. Gamble that amount on the Grand National

First question you ask the ' Do you insure pedal cycles to the value of ( your most expensive bike add here)?'
Saves a lot of time and listening to drivel.........

It was - would have wasted an awful lot more time otherwise. The place wanting to specify bikes over £250 would insure a £4000 one!

Confirmed that AA total liability for theft from a car is £1000 minus £200 excess (can be reduced to £100 - cost to me was extra £20 premium), plus your bike is not new for old - wear and tear is taken into account. Cheaper than M&S renewal for me.

M&S my renewal went up £80 when I specified a £2500 bike.

HSBC charged £238 for the bike(!) and not insured in a car unless totally out of sight in the boot (but curiously covered if locked to a rack).
