is it possible to get a medium h/t mtb or a large road bike into a Fiat 500? just wondering - could make purchase of a second car (for Mrs DHS) marginally more justifiable ... 😀

Where there's a will there's a way. Seats fold, bicycle wheels are removable...

I imagine it's possible, but I think I'd be looking at racks! A boot rack would be less hassle on such a small car.

I managed to get my Scott E-Genius 710 650b+ in my parents suzuki alto when i drove up to bothy bikes in january, wheels off, seat post dropper lowered and front passenger seat forward and tilted as far as it would go - utterly hateful job that i only wanted to do once so i've recently bought a ford connect van for £600 - doors open and wheel bike right in, secure with two bungee cords and that's it.

I've had my 58cm CX bike in a Suzuki Alto. Wheels and mudguards off and seat post taken out. Wouldn't have liked to have a passenger in the car though

Abigale can get a 650b Enduro in the back of our Fiat 500. Needs the back seats down, both wheels of and the bars go behind the drivers seat vertical into the footwell.

I used to get my Marin Team in the back of my (old style) Mini, but then I've never been that fussed about keeping the inside of my cars nice.

My 456c evo fits in the back on my mini with the seats down and both wheels out seatpost still attached showing about 30cm of post. I'm pretty sure it would fit my my other halfs fiat 500 but it has cream seats so wouldn't like to try!

What worries me is if you have a crash.. It won't be pretty if you have all that stuff crammed in.

I get my 56cm road bike into a panda, so same chassis as a 500. And room for a passenger as well. Easy

All things possible, we have an old Micra and its wheels off but two MTBs head in there no prob with back seats down. Or one with wheels off in the boot space, with rear seats up but the half the the bars and come over a seat back, easily sat around though.
We also have roof bars with bike carriers that go on the others. Not so sprog James leaves a set on his Fabia all the time (diy research by him, found no discernible difference in normal driving mpg etc..)

2x 29er fs bikes with front wheels removed in a 3 door fiesta. I think I could fit another small one of with wheels removed.

Colleague of mine went to collect his new road bike in an Elise. His wife (so he claimed) had destroyed the engine in the estate car by driving through a flooded road.

We did have pictures. A 54 ish road bike goes in the passenger seat with wheels, pedals and seatpin off completely. Bars and forks disconnected and strapped to the frame. Gear lever was accessed through the rear triangle.

For all the hassle removing, refitting, dirtying the cars insides...just get a rack. If you're in Birmingham you can have my halfords one for free 🙂

Yes, my parents have one and my dad brings his bike up to mine in it when he can persuade my mum it won't mark the interior.

We got 2 road bikes and a track tandem frame/ forks into a 3dr Fiesta sometime around 98/99.
Used to get 2 mtbs, big tent and sleeping stuff + 2 rucksacks with 2 days worth of kit for Polaris in that same Fiesta with the back seats down.

I work in a bikeshop and this female customer is there to pick up her specialized Epic in a large. Since the shop is empty I offer to help her to pack the bike in the car(before I see her car in the parking lot). A freaking Toyota Aygo ! She was able to pack the bike in the car only with the front wheel off and close all doors.

It's all very well saying 'just don't crash' but if someone coming the opposite way sneezes and hits you head on, you've not only got crashing to worry about, your gonna take a bike and /or wheels to the back of the head at 50+ mph.. That's gonna sting. Or rather it won't, you probably won't feel a thing!
