hi all,

hoping someone can help me......I'm coming back to the fold without anything to ride!! I have a budget of about £300 and want something i can use for the daily commute as well as a bit of weekend fun. I wont be doing anything too silly ( 😉 ) on it but want something pretty decent as past bikes have been an XTR-kitted E8 and 'Dale Jekyll!

All advice gratefully received!

Cheers,

Morgs

Hi Morgs,

I'm defo no bike expert, still learning after a few years.

With a budget of £300 you are not going to get anything amazing, certainly no XTR kit. You could risk ebay and look out for a little used hardtail.

Few years ago I was in almost the same position as you, didn't want to spend much but wanted to get into biking again. I bought an Evans brand bike, Pinnacle Evolution. Although it was over your budget at 600, I sold it less than a year later for £350. My mate also sold a year old rockhopper for about £350....so if you know what to look for ebay might be better than a new one.

If you want to go new I would say look out for the best components, not sure what disk brakes are like at that level, they might not even be hydraulic so you could be better going for good V brakes.

Just to give you a couple of ideas.....

Just do loads of research and find out all you can about what you are buying.

Hope that helps and enjoy getting back into it!

I'd maybe look on ebay and the classifieds here for an on-one inbred build.

I bought my Scott scale 50 in 2007 for 350 which was 10 months old and new was 900. Still using it now minus the frame I cracked. Also it had avid juicy 3 hydraulic disc brakes aswell. So check for trade ins at bike shops. People always want something better. Might be able to get yourself a half decent 2nd hand bike with reasonable components. Happy hunting.

thanks for advice guys - bought a used marin attack trail frame with fox air shock, hope XC / mavic wheelset, hope headset, skewers & seat clamp, azonic bar, seatpost and XT front mech so far. hoping to get some conti verticals and a saddle on here shortly....

thinking i'll leave it there till payday and buy the SLX groupset from that German palce for €219 and have found some new Avid Juicy 3's (185mm front / 160mm rear) for £35.99 each.

Then its just a fork, a stem and a couple of tubes!
