I have a Garmin edge 530. I don't really like it.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very capable device but at the same time it is bloody infuriating at times - especially when navigating. The main reason I picked up an on bike GPS was so I could load a route up and follow it - or get me back to the car/house when I need to. Without the navigation options it has, pretty much everything else can be done with my garmin vivoactive watch.

But it appears that there is absolutely no way that I can run the device as map only - it always has to be flicking between the map and at least one data screen. There is no intelligence about when it flicks between screens and I can almost guarantee that every other turning I am approaching will see it switching away to the screen I do't give a crap about.

Nothing I can find online suggests it is possible to change this behavour - can anyone advice to the contrary?

If not, what options do I have for a good MTB navigation device that will run as a map only?

An old phone?

Or even a new cheap phone.

I have no idea about the Garmin question but I was half interested in getting a bike computer but think I might just stick to the phone idea. Battery life & screen brightness can be an issue.

Lezyne Mega XL can remain on map page, you can if desired add two metrics to top of screen.

I think you may have done something odd in the settings, unfortunately I can’t say what. My 830 (and 820 before it and 810 before that) will happily sit on the map screen all day, would be odd if the 530 (basically the same thing without the touch screen) is different

My 810 garmin had a setting where it would scroll between screens.

OS maps app on a phone is the only mapping I find to be accurate enough.

Yeah my 530 will switch to the map screen when a turn comes up, but won't switch away when it's already on it.

Edge Explore.

Had mine set to map in battery saver mode.
Approaching a turn and the map turns on with a turn warning. After the turn went back to battery saver mode

Was actually impressed 🙂

Mine doesn’t behave in that way. When I put it on the map screen it stays there. You must have missed a setting.

There is a setting to rotate the display pages. You maybe need to switch that off. Edge 530's will happily sit on map all day if that is what you want.
EDIT. It's called auto-scroll

Check your settings, mine stays on the map screen without changing to something else. There is a setting for auto zoom I think.

Check you haven't got turned on:
upcoming climb / climb pro?
Laps
Pace partner
Auto Scrolling

Thankyou folks, STW does it again, it was auto scroll that I had turned on.

I recall seeing that and thinking it was relating to the map scrolling as you ride... silly me... RTFM.

Brilliant, just what I needed! My 830 annoyingly changes to a climb screen (which I don't need) often just before a turn, when I want to see the map. Presume auto scroll as above, will give it a try.

No. That will be because you have Climb Pro selected. Nothing to do with auto-scroll.
