A friend is going to cycle the coast to coast route next summer and asked me what a suitable bike for this adventure would be? She is a beginner, absolute maximum budget would be £500 (although she has confessed she would rather spend £200!). Would imagine that afterwards the bike would only be used very occasionally for pedalling into the village and back. Since I have never done this route I don't know whether she needs a mountain bike or not? Would be very grateful for suggestions for suitable bikes.
My GF brought a Specilized Myka hardtail for around £320 ish. This is the first time she has ridden a bike in 15 - 20 years and finds it great now she has a bit of confidence.
What C2C route? Surely what bike she needs will depend on that. The off-road one that goes through the Lakes would be pretty tough for a beginner I think.
I would imagine it will be the road version of C2C thinking about it, since she is doing it with her brother who has so far been lending her a road bike. She seems to be more interested in hybrid bikes though.
Well a hybrid would be comfier than a full on road bike, especially for a beginner, as road bikes tend to have a pretty aggressively stretched out position. A road bike with slick road tyres would be noticeably more efficient though.
