A few of us planning to have a shot of the Golfie at Inners tomorrow. I've never been before but have been told I'll find it all do-able so long as I don't stop, 'cause it's so steep you canny' get back on. Question is, having already precluded the fat-bike, what bike have I the best chances of surviving on, 29er full suss (Camber Evo) or the 27.5 hard tail (Stanton Switchback)?

I'd imagine a full sus will give a bit more traction assuming the same tyres are on each but it's not something to lose sleep over

slacker the better and a low seat, decent brakes

Is traction the same as grip?

Switchback. When it's proper techy steep (to the point you can't pedal) but not droppy, full sus doesn't really help.

The one with the shitest brakes.
You'll not have stopping as an option then.
I'm not even joking here.
Most of the stuff I've ridden over the golfie actually seems ok once you let the brakes off.
Getting your head round that is a different matter.

Since you're asking the question.. the camber evo. Run the shock slightly soft if you're feeling its too steep. Also.. Golfie aint that steep.

What's wrong with saying "golf course" and "Innerleithen"?

It's poor standards like this that ruins Christmas for millions.

Defo take full susser . Most of the descents off the top your right off the back hanging on. It is steep espacially spanner n liver damage . Great place to ride though if you not got trail forks you might struggle to find your way around ...

It's really not that hard to navigate.
Most stuff is off the same climb.
There'll be loads of people about to point you in the right direction.
Just ride up and pick a random trail.

Okay, so take the Camber, no take the Switchback, best brakes, no shittiest brakes, it's really steep, no it's not. We've got a guide thanks fatboy4.
Cheers folks.

Aye, my slaughter on the rear gave a few twitchy moments on date night on Sunday!.

Fatboy4, it is steep. Yes there are steeper places to ride, but that doesn't make golfie not steep, that's just silly.

Don't worry last time I was there had an aggressor on, it stuck fine to the surface, shame the surface wasn't attached to the hill side

After you get more than 100 yards into the trees I don't think there's any surface that's still attached to the hill apart from rock and root.

On second thoughts, put the rear wheel off the hardtail on the full sus.
Extra slackness and lower BB.
You won't be able to fall off if you try.

Stop worrying about slackness.
slack steering is great for going fast over rough ground but no real help at all for brakedragging down unfamiliar not exactly vert woodland trails.
My favourite bike to ride at the golfie was always a 69deg 100mm dirt jump hardtail (Yes with a semi slick rear). being short and mega poppy DJ bikes are imense fun bike through the furrows.

I'm heading down tomorrow.

Where and when are you leaving from?

We're heading from mostly West Lothian and aiming to be at the Town Hall car park (opp. the Memorial Hall I've been told) at 11.

The public car park opposite the church on Lethen Road, aye? (never heard it called memoral hall before, but it doesn't sell beer or kebabs so why would I?) 😉
That's where I generally park to head up the Glofie too. Over the wee bridge and off road instead of joining the enduro peletons on the tarmac tho.
Don't wait there for me (I'm not that organised) but I'll probably see you en-route. I speak to everyone anyway.
Any idea which trails you're planning on trying?

Probably about 11am. Don't really have a plan but I am free for a change. I don't understand that other stuff you're talking about.

My two cents on this topic is that the tires are much more important at golfie than head angle, although a slack HA does make things easier.

A lot of the trails at golfie are quite steep, especially if you've never been there before it can be a bit of a mental obstacle. I would say just go with the bike you are most confident with and has decent tires such as mud spikes to get the best grip.

As others have said, the secret to mastering golfie trails is momentum; if you stop on a steep section it can be difficult to get back on the bike and can make it more mentally challenging than it should be.

Just back from a 5hr glofie extravaganza. Place is still pretty dry considering the time of year. Did Loan Wolf, 3G, offender, flat white, Aussie, pony and a couple of others on the elibank side. battery died at 18miles the final climbs were very slow and I ended up getting a leg cramp descending the last woods meters from where I got a spasm a few months back with SSStu n his Mrs... weird! actually probaly not. 1 tunnocks and 500ml of water probably isn't the correct fuel mix 😉
Spoke to loads of folk but didn't see a Camber or a Switchback beneath any of them.
What bike did you choose in the end? And what trails did you ride?

Switchback for the win. A bit of steering at the front end but mostly from the feet, felt like the right bike for me. We went to the top and started with New Wolf, upper and lower, something about a Loner, Flat White, Repeat Offender, New York New York and more. One of our team was on a curfew so we probably only scratched the surface, I'm looking forward to getting back down. It makes you realise how "manicured" so many trails elsewhere are. Still buzzin'.

Flat White is manicured beautifully just now. I never really liked it all that much before.

One of my team is a fud for not checking his bike's wheels actually turn before arranging to come riding and cancelling 10 minutes before I got there. 😀
If you're reading this and managed to fix your brake I might be up for going again tomorrow (Morning).

He isn't keen on multitools from the look of it. More of a "whole toolbox" man.
