currently has a 24” wheel islabike

Fancy something little bit more hardcore but wanting to retain light weight

Suspension forks and disc brakes wanted.

googling gives lots options

24 or 26”?

26 frame with 24 wheels initially?

off the shelf or build something?

You may end up having to build wheels - decent, light, disc-compatible 24" wheels seemed to be at a premium when I was looking.

Halfords do a voodoo nzumbi on 26" wheels or a voodoo soukri on 27.5 wheels (its sold as a 'womens' bike but i just got one for my 10yr old lad).

Just picked up an XS Merida big seven 300 for my daughter - she's turning 10 in a couple of weeks and is average height. She's also moving up from an Islabike Beinn 24. We really struggled to find anything which satisfied my requirements in terms of spec and her requirement that IT MUST BE BLUE!

Got it on C2W, so saved quite a few pennies.

Is she too big for the current bike or do you just want more hardcore?

24 wheels on a 26 frame is probably going to be quite frame dependent in terms of how it affects handling.

It's not going to be any smaller than 26 wheels on a 27.5... unless it's a specific kids frame.

Depending what you mean by more hardcore there is also FS.

We have a Fluid 24" that after mods comes in at 11kg ... or 13kg with DH tyres.  Bought 2nd had as a complete bike then stripped and rebuilt. It's on the large side for 24 and bought when he was 7 and hopefully last another year till he's 9

They also make a 26 version ... Trek also do a 26 FS but it can't take a dropper.

If your looking really hardcore DH only then there are the Mondrakers and such as well but I'm guessing not if you're worried about weight.

Might be easier to find 26 disc wheels to stick on a 27.5 frame I’m thinking

I bought my son one of these last year.

https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-kauri-26-inch-kids-bike-EV275992

He turned 9 and it fitted him with plenty room to grow. He struggled a bit with the gearing on hills so when I upgraded my own gears I put 10sp XT with a sunrace 11-42 rear cassette onto the Kauri.

Pinnacle looks good

suppose could always stick a Reba or similar on it

weight not bad and I suppose there’s the chance of picking up some lightweight 26 wheels
