I am looking to get a new bike for our 5 1/2 year old son. He is short for his size with a longer torso and shorter legs. He is currently riding a CNOC 14 but he is beginning to get a bit big for it. Plus, our youngest is ready for it now.
I am curious to others opinions on 16" vs 20" tire. At this point, I'd like to keep him on 16" tire for a while because it would seem to be more conducive to his riding style.
- more likely to be on road than off road
- more likely to favor agility over speed
- more likely to do tricks (more of I guess flatland bmx) than getting air
- enjoys zipping around the walls of the local skate park
As far as bike choices, he probably wouldn't need a full-on bmx bike at this point. Something that he can ride around but still have a little fun tossing around from time to time. Plus a heavier bike might be a bit much for him to handle as he isn't naturally strong for his age.
The CNOC 16 is a logical upgrade from the CNOC 14 but I was leaning towards a Frog 48 as it's 9.5" frame already fits him and he won't outgrow it as soon. Having not tried the bike though I am a bit concerned about the steering limiter and it limiting what tricks he could do with the bike. Anyone have any experience with the steering limiter and whether it can be easily modified or removed.
I have limited knowledge of the other bikes out there. Anything other bikes we should be looking at?
Carrera detonate
Decent entry level ful susers.
Got my lad one when he was 5 ish
Good few years out off it.
Lots of fun too
Both my kids went run - 14 - 16 on their Spawn bikes. My big and strong for his age eldest went into 20's at 5. My small for age 4.5 youngest probably won't hit 20" for another 18mo
I'm a firm believer in encouraging rider progression on the most appropriate equipment (size and weight) as this prevents you from making smaller riders struggle at any point. Fortunately for you, 2 kids mean you get double your money value out of bikes.
I've no experience of UK available kids bikes.
