Booked a weekend with Tom Hutton doing the bike packing, however my current full susser will not be suitable.

I have my old Whyte 905, 2011 model, but drivetrain all a bit ****ed, since sitting in the garage for a while without any use.

So, do I spend a few hundred on a 2x12 set up or 1x11 or do I just hire a suitable bike for the weekend?

I do not have much spare cash at the moment, so 'new' groupset would ideally be 2nd hand, as I do not want to just buy a really cheap set for the sake of it.

Or if anyone can recommend a place that does bike hire in the Taunton to Honiton area?

I'd be looking at having a fettle of it first - will you be able to get it in a usable state to last the trip?

Also, what's the current setup and is it just gears/cassette and chain that would need an upgrade, or is it mechs and chainrings also?

Sorry, can't help on the bike hiring side,

Well, I think the current mechs and chainrings would need replacing, so I did think if it all needs replacing, why not go for the 2x12 etc.

The rest of the bike is OK, I put new XT brakes on a couple of years back, but not really used since, along with some forks. Replaced one rim...could not afford to do the other at the time, do not mind the mismatched wheels though, adds character!

Try ... maybe:

2x10 Deore (M6000)

Rear mech in "GS" version.

Rear: 11...42

Front: 24T + 34T (mountain goat set up)

Front mech: "new" M6000 "side swing". No chain drop any more...

Fantastic stuff! Have it on three bikes now.

If you like: google for some very recent reviews about this 2x10 Deore.

When I spoke to Tom he did not recommend it. It is an Orbea Rallon.

Could you not swap stuff over from the full sus and then get new kit for that as it seems that's the one that gets ridden more?

I'd guess the orbea is 12mm bolt through & boost and the whyte isn't

And the point ? What's wrong with a Rallon ? Unless it's a race, 30s or even 3 minutes here or there at the end of the day isn't going to matter in the grand scheme of things.

If it's just the drivetrain, move it across from your good bike just for the weekend. A couple of hours, new cables, and you'll be flying. Give me a shout if you want a hand.
