Hi, have a brand new Giant Trance X, it’s only a few rides old and Iv noticed a bit of a knock/creak on the bike. It only happens when the seatpost is up I’m sat down and pedalling. It doesn’t happen when the seat it is down and I’m pedalling, nor does it do it if I have the seat up and I’m not pedalling.

So I’m 6ft 3 and just under 17stone so i am not light at all - I tried tightening the seat incase it was the rails, changed pedals and it has gone back to the shop and they are not able to make the noise happen, guessing they are a lot lighter than me. But they did change the bottom bracket made sure the axles were greased etc.

So one solution is to lose a load of weight and it won’t creak but I kind of want to know what could be the issue as I have rode loads of bikes at this weight and not had any issue.

Any ideas?

I had a random creak from a full susser last year. Turned out it was the main pivot bearing cup. It was a smidge undersized causing the bearing to bind. I found it when i striped the suspension down and checked to see if all the bearings were running smoothly (or not).

Your weight/height. wont be the issue

Thanks for the reply - in that scenario I would expect it to creak the whole time not just when pedalling as when I’m compressing the bike when rolling I have no issues

Saddle rails where they enter the saddle? One of my saddles creaks only at certain angles/loads.
Dropper post?

Does it do it while peddaling lightly and hard?

Check the seatpost is liberally greased, preferably with that carbon grip paste. I had similar symptoms on my Whyte and after checking and lubricating all other points of possible creakiness this cured it. It has some grease on it, but not enough. Use the carbon paste because if you crank the clamp bolt up too tight to stop it sliding down, the dropper might not work properly.

Dropper post is new - they replaced that as the original was making a noise in the frame (rattling). I tightened the saddle pretty tight onto rails. From memory it happens when pedalling light or hard but doesnt do it when i stand up.

Il try that carbon paste

Mystery creek solutions for me have included

Seatpost not greased/ carbon pastes enough

Seat clamp not greased enough

Loose chain ring bolts

Loose pedals

Pedals needing rebuilt

Loose headset

Dead bearings in suspension

A cable sliding through a cable guide ( super cabling on 2005 giant reign that eventually wore the cable guide out)

Saddle creaking

Saddle rails creaking

Seatpost clamp creaking on saddle rails.

If it's new id try and make it creak in front of them. Then it's their problem again

+ one for martin above, can seem like the seat, but can be anything, and trial, error and grease are the best method to solve it

So Iv tried several things now and the noise isn’t as bad but it’s still there.

i notice that when i pedal quicker the noise gets quicker - it’s not a massive sound, I’m not even sure if it’s a creak now - but when i shift my weight on the bike .. it goes.

im tempted to put a normal seatpost in it and see if its the dropper

It only makes the noise when pedalling so I’d expect the axle would be ok?

I could try those, the bike went back and they supposedly torqued everything up. Il give that a whirl tomorrow

On 2 different bikes I had to remove and clean the chainring, then put some copper grease on the chainring and crank interface to stop it clicking.

Thanks - only bit I’m struggling with is it only happens when I’m sat down, if I change body position/shuffle around it stops - but when I get back to a natural biking position it starts again.

Managed to capture the noise on camera - you can hear it about 8secs in.

The noise I thought it must be at 10 seconds in also was apparent when you were freewheeling so I’m not sure what noise you are referring to..🤷‍♂️

Not in my experience, spent ages tracing a creaking that was only apparent when pedalling and it was the axle. Prob the loading while pedalling is different or something. Anyway, just a thought.

Apologies, just discovered this on a bike and I thought I'd add it to the mix.
