Hi Everyone

So I’ve decided after Christmas to buy a new bike. The two choices are a giant xtc slr 1 or a giant fathom 1. I understand there is a good price difference but any tips or advice on the two. I’m wanting to use it for mtb trails and tracks etc. obviously one doesn’t have a seat dropper post.
What do people think

Thanks
Tom

From a very quick look they’re quite different bikes.

The XTC looks like a reasonably uncomfortable but quick XC bike, the Fathom a bit of a gnarlier trail bike.

Why have you decided on those two and what / where do you want to ride?

Yeah they are totally different. I want something that’s comfortable to ride I’m not to fussed about speed. I chose these two just based on spec and price really But I’m definitely open to other recommendations? I’ll be riding over the moors, mtb trails nothing hardcore really.

Thanks
Tom

The fathom looks more comfortable to me tbh.

29er wheels would smooth things out more - I’d be looking at something like an On One Scandal from Planet X or a Vitus Sentier personally. Giant make decent bikes but they aren’t always the best spec for the money.

Based on you user name I'd chose a cove stiffee :-)

I went from a stiffee to an orange clockwork 120 to onone hello Dave.

Get the bike with the slacker head angle would be my advice

So it’s funny you say that I was really
Tempted by a on one scandal the spec
For the price seems really good but I wasn’t sure what they are like ? I’d say it seems like more bike for the my money and I agree sometimes the giant don’t always have the best gear on them.

Scandal is pretty decent. The geometry is modern but sensible - it’s not stupidly long or slack nor is it old and short / steep.

It’s pretty much the definition of a modern trail hardtail I’d say.

Also check Sonder or Nukeproof/Vitus/Marin at similar price points

So need some advice looking on the on one scandal and the size guide. I’m 5ft 6 so I’m almost in between a small and a medium. Any advice on this ? Obviously I can’t buy both bikes 😂

There are 2 huge threads on the Scandal, well worth finding. From memory the come up big. I bought my grown up son a scandal. I’d budget for a dropper and maybe better tyres. They do seem to hit a key problem price point without much competition
