Hi All

Looking at Thule roof bar bike carriers really not sure what to get. What are people using and recommend ? It’s for one bike only and I’d also consider other makes.

Thanks
Tom

I have the old trusty Thule 591s and love them, especially after replacing the straps with Voile ones.

My mate replaced his 591s with the newer 598s, and he regrets it, saying they are much more awkward.

I think I have 590s. They are great

591’s are fine, but 598 are a good bit nicer to use; mainly racket mech on straps (is nasty going back to my 591’s after getting use to this), clamp pressure auto limit and better clamp shape.

598 are great. Worth the extra over 591 as the wheel trays are tougher and less prone to cracking. Also has ratchet straps and a torque limiter on the clamp to avoid crushing carbon. Mine still going strong after 6 years.

I had the 598's as they were long enough for my Geometron. They were fine to use.

Long gone since we got a car with a tow bar. I much prefer have them on the back than the roof.

I’m sure Thule put the torque limiter on because people weren’t doing them up tight enough.

We’ve 2 598s and 2 591s. I tend to use the 598s as first line and the 591s when I need to carry more than two bikes. They’re much the same in practice.

Cheers everyone for the advice. Definitely given me a direction to look. So will both these be ok with a hybrid bike with 700c wheels on?

If you after the Thule 598 then these volvo branded ones are identical except for the Volvo branding. A good saving over the Thule branded ones.

Yakima Highroad is worth considering too https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php/car-specific-accessories/yakima_black_highroad_8002124/Qx%40w%2C6M42VAwp3%40Rb%7B~cC4urewto9i

Yakima quality easily is on par with Thule

Good tip from @dow8519 - plenty of Thule stuff can be had cheap when branded third party (think I saw some Renault roof bar feet that were Thule a while ago?)

Flipping heck these is a bell of a difference in the same but branded Volvo over the Thule ones. I know which I’ll be getting 😂

We've the Volvo ones - I sold my older, well used ones and bought new Volvo ones in a sale for £10 less.... 😎

Couple with proper Thule aero bars.
