Hi all... Looking at buying a new to me bike. After looking at a shop new stump jumper Evo, I have instead opted to buy 2nd hand, budget of sub £2k. So far a orbea rallon or specialized enduro 2018, are in the running. Coming from a 2008 enduro, I expect anything will be noticeable different. The 2018 enduro has a ohlins fork and shock, are they OK?... Any other suggestions?
This thread is just sitting her unanswered, so I thought I’d give it a bump by saying that I have no idea as I haven’t ridden a mountain bike in years.
no idea what they’d cost in GBP, but i’d look at a ripley af or a ripmo af.
the ripmo is closer to the stumpy evo
though you may find a stumpjumper evo at a good used price.
edit: have you looked at the the classified section on here or the pink bike buy/sell? there will be lots to choose from on those.

OP what size are you? If XL then wiggle/crc still have some massive discounts on the Vitus Sommet and Escarpe. If not then as mentioned above, have a look on Pinkbike or the classifieds on here. It’s definitely a buyers market at the minute, 2k should open up plenty of options.
What year Rallon was it vs the 2018 enduro?
£2k for a 2018 Enduro sounds a bit high in the current market TBH.
If you're currently riding a 2008 Enduro, you might find something around 140-150mm rear travel with modern geometry to be way more capable and versatile. Stumpy Evo might be a good place to start if you like Spesh bikes.
You should easily be able to get a well-specced bike from the last couple of years for £2k.
I’d be looking brand new for that budget. Something like this Ripmo AF if you’re not a weight weenie.
That Ripmo is exactly the sort of bike I was thinking of.
I believe they pedal very well, and they're not THAT heavy compared to similar bikes.
£2k for a 2018 enduro does sound a lot of money.
You can buy a marzocchi / fox and deore Spec Orbea Occam H30 for less than £2k new
Smidge over budget but canyon have some very good vfm full sussers, the strive 160 just over budget but looks pretty sorted spec wise with no noticeable downgrades to address
To be honest this type of bike should get you something very good second hand or something pretty useful new given everyone seems to be having fire sales
I’d agree with the above. With the discounts floating around at the moment it’s hard to justify a second hand bike with no warranty (who knows how close to the fatigue limit is is already even in good cosmetic condition). Worth it for a big discount over new, but you can get a brilliant new bike for that money now.
The ripmo looks great, if you can stretch a bit more, there are new carbon slashes for £2400 in the PSA thread. Evans also have a specialized status for 2k. There are definitely more deals about.
If you're looking for newer geometry and at mainstream brands you should really look at something newer as 2018 was only when the non-mainstream brands started producing the more modern stuff - I've a 2018 Cotic, and it was a couple of years ahead of it's time.
Buying s/h is though a minefield, you could get a totally unused bike just as easy as getting one that needs a whole host of work - a fork/shock service is +£200 or easy to have no change from £200 for a drivetrain etc.
I wouldn’t buy an old enduro personally. Like the posters above said - that Ripmo is a bargain. If you wanted to strip some weight out of it the deore cassette and cranksets are easy places to do that. Swap for an xt cassette and slx or xt cranks.
The Balfe’s bike deals someone posted recently looked good - think the Slash or the previous Gen Fuel Ex looked good deals.
I’d avoid discounted carbon Nukeproof Megas personally as a lot of them cracked and had to be warrantee’d.
Bird we’re knocking out some good deals on the AM9 (may now be out of stock) but the Aeris 9 can also be built up quite competitively priced.
The Orbeas are ok but some have slightly awkward pivots to service with pre-load tools and I know the Rise (albeit e bike) had a bit of a flexy back end so say. If going with those I’d go new rather than secondhand probably.
Great help... Cheers for responses.... I'm xl so looks like plenty of options. Had assumed 2018 would be fairly modern geometry compared to my old bike. 2nd hand seemed to be a good way to get better compoents/ carbon frame. Weights not a issue, unless it's heavier than my existing bike. Which is difficult as 29inch wheels are heavier
I've had my Ripmo AF for about 6 months now and can thoroughly recommend them. It pedals really well and the DVO suspension is first rate.
I paid £2400 for mine which I thought was a bargain, £1899 is stupid cheap for a bike of that quality.
Lots of love for the Ibis.... Not looked at it before. It's not the best looking of bikes from the pictures online. Will try and see if I can view one in the flesh
The thing is with something like a 2018 enduro is you might get Hope bling / Fox Factory suspension or something on it, but other geometry things have moved on since then - particularly reach and head angles. A number of bikes (not the Ripmo actually) will have steeper seat angles too. It’s also a 6 ish year old frame now so it could have some fatigue in it etc.
The Trek Slash is a decent big bike - although the fork isn’t as good as the Dvonon that ripmo (the Zeb select could do with a damper uk grade):

This was mentioned earlier and looks very good for £2k https://www.specialized.com/gb/en/status-160/p/199767?color=320388-199767&searchText=93722-7204&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%20Shopping_UK_Bikes_HighAOV_ROI&utm_id=17857134217&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAs6-sBhBmEiwA1Nl8s8bU2urH-sACvllfbqgGIf6rnGg2EOMGjb344Yv7vROAzH0LlM533xoCj1sQAvD_BwE
Not ridden one so only an opinion based on what I can see online.
AFAIK, Bird still have some crazy cheap AM9's in XL only. They are quite a long bike, so depends how tall you are (my L is approx Santa Cruz XL size).
They also had some ex demo bikes at your budget, which come fully serviced & have warranty on them. Might be worth a call to see what's available.
SaxonRider - great post!
