Flying with BA in a few weeks time and taking our bikes. Weight limit is 23kg so going to be tight, any experiences of how strict they are with the allowances?

Different at different airports. At Glasgow I slung my bag onto the heavy goods belt and nobody checked the weight and just sent it through. I think in Geneva they did check it but my weight was OK.

Just flew BA to/from the Alps via LHR with no issues. 23kg is a pretty substantial allowance, you are not supposed to put non-bike stuff in the bag, I used my pads, spare tyres to protect the bike along with normal pipe lagging etc.

It's great they have no extra charges for bikes.

I got my Hemlock (about 30lbs) packed under 20 kilos for a trip to France once. It was only possible by reducing the protection to a level I wasn't happy with, though, and by taking some bits of the bike in hand luggage. Bottom line is, a packed bike's heavy because we don't trust the airlines with our bikes! If I pack it how I want to, it's almost 30 kilos

In the end, my mates' bags were both overweight and nobody cared.

Definitely variable. A couple of weeks ago, I flew with a friend and my bag was slightly over (Evoc bags are heavy!) but nowhere near the 32kg single item limit and friend was slightly under. The checkin nazi made us move stuff between bags to get them both closer to 23kg. Other times they have hardly batted an eyelid at a couple of kilos over.
