"Thinking" about doing Dirty Reiver next year. I've got a gravel/adventure bike but wheelset is not tubeless ready so I was wondering would Stans injected into tubes be a viable workaround? I know guys who did do it couple years ago with tubes but were lucky enough not to puncture. Also, probably an idiotic idea, but does anyone do it on a fat bike? I know you are carrying extra weight but from what I've read comfort seems to be just as important. Then again dragging 14kg round 200km may not be that good idea. I know the Kanza does have a separate fat bike category. Feedback from DR vets welcome!
Think the main cause of punctures on the DR are pinch flats, which aren't likely going to seal with fluid. So, if you're running tubes, you can't run low pressures as you'll still get pinch flats, you'd need to run higher pressures, in which case you might as well dispense with the fluid.
Not doing the Reiver, but have had to use one of the seal and inflate canisters on my road bike whilst commuting this week. It looked just like stans going in.
The tyres are shredded with little nicks and cuts but I'm determined to get more miles on them before replacing so was wondering if sealant works then I might stick some sealant in a tube in the rear (handily I already have a 50g inner tube with a slow leak where it's perished in my saddlebag so nothing to lose).
50g of sealant in a 50g tube in a 200g tyre is still a lot lighter than Schwalbe Marathons!
cheers. On the gravel bike I usually vary anything between 35-45 psi on WTB Nano 40c tyres. I probably would go no lower than 35 on the DR. From what I've heard ideally you want the comfort of lower pressures but only really an option if you are going tubeless.
Doing it for fun rather than position, I ran 40c WTB Nanos, tubeless, around about 40psi.
Could you not 'ghetto tubeless' the wheelset?
Also did it for fun rather than any sort of time - 42c WTB Resolutes, tubeless with Orange Endurance goop, about 38psi IIRC worked pretty well.
Tazzy did it on a 29+ SS Stooge...not sure I'd want to do it on a fat bike 😉
I did some searching on ghetto tubeless on Alex XD-Lites and nearly everyone reported poor results. Would rather not have it setup half-arsed. Run full tubeless on my Mulefut 80SL's on fat bike and it's totally solid, never had to use a plug kit yet. Really comfy fast rolling ride (for a fat bike) but not sure I would want to do 200km of gravel on it. Still, that being said it rolls really well on gravel. Maybe with some bar ends, softer grips and some weight saving it might be a goer.
I managed to tubeless the cheap Nanos on non tubeless rims ok with Stans Tape on my SS Charge Grinduro, bought would perhaps look to swap out for tubeless wheels? There were a hell of a lot of peope pinch puncturing on the descents and on a bike with no suspension, being able to run lower pressures just makes things more comfortable.
On my geared bike, i have Crest rims with lovely 45c WTB Riddlers which i really like

yeh but 29+ rolls like a mad thing once up to speed. The SS was a ****er on a couple of the long drags though 🙂
on the ghetto thing, sod that, just use the Stans cyclocross tubelss conversion kit with the rim strips, 50 quid ish from CRC from memory. works a treat. Tyre wise you want the biggest volume can can get into your frame so you can drop pressure a bit without snakebiting to take a bit of the hand hammering out.
If you want puncture sealant in inner tubes I think Slime is more effective than Stans.
I've done it 3 times using WTB Nano 40c wired tyres inflated to 40 psi. Never punctured.
