My gravel bike has good tyre clearance so was wondering what would be the biggest 700c gravel tyre that would still be not too draggy on the road? I don't want a 29er MTB tyre as I do use it on the road a lot but would like a good cushion for my fairly limited offroad
I use 45mm WTB Raddlers on my gravel and don't feel it to be slow at all on tarmac.
It's been years since I've had a true road bike, so my thoughts may be miss guided but it is smooth and fast enough for a bike that will also handle quite interesting stuff off road too.
I think that Terravail do the Rutland and Sparwood in 2.1 inch
Vittoria do the Terrano dry in 2.1 inch
But there are big fast rolling MTB tyres as well so I wouldn’t right them off
schwalbe big apple 29 x 2.35 on my fargo. fast as heck.
also got some schwalbe big ben plus. 29 x 2. even faster.
probably do half of my 6k yearly miles offroad on them.
Not much between the fastest gravel and XC MTB tyres. I've got Conti Raceking Protection, fast on road but I've never ridden a road bike.

Good clearance I'd go 2.1 mezcals, poor clearance WTB resolutes at 42mm
2.1 Mezcals here - the lightweight ones - sourced them for about £25 each.
Recommended.
Terravails or indeed Rene Herse - much pricier.
can i also add, i rode Terravail sparwood 29 x 2.1 for the first 3k miles on my fargo.
the rear was almost bald, and the sidewall split. this was the blackwalled tougher version.
The trouble with Tyre Rolling . Com is that you can’t compare mtb and gravel tyres unless you pay so you can see all the pressures
It’s quite compacted comparing sizes any way. A bigger tyre will have less rolling resistance than a smaller one at the same pressure. But as the bigger tyre is heavier, less aerodynamic and less comfortable at the same pressure it’s useless comparing at the same pressure
Based upon experience mezcal 2.1 (700x52) are good but drag more than Rene Herse Oracle Pass 48s, and at least a third of the price. Schwalbe g-one all around 2.3 roll better than the mezcals and are very close to the same weight as the rh fleecer ridge.
Rh snoqualmie pass 700x44 are very lovely but pricey and not the most reliable to do tubeless. I’d go gravelking slick 40 for near as damn it the same thing. I’ve been using challenge getaway 700x45 and they’re great but seem to be wearing fast. I realise this is all just anecdotal but I do love tyres and tend to buy a lot of them.
Schwalbe G One Ultrabite on the front and G One bite on the back are working really well on my Grizl in 50mm flavour.
Don’t put an Ultrabite on the back……………..
I use WTB Nine Lines in 2.25 on my gravel bike. Still roll well on tarmac and also do them in a small size I think.
Nine-lines on my Cutthroat as well. It came with Sparwoods and the rear was toast in a week having done the Atlas Mountain Race.
I run Gravelking 50c's on my Freeranger.
I've run them back-to-back with a pair of 28c Schwalbe Durano's on a road loop, a few attempts using either over different days and the Gravelking's were all of a minute slower over the hour - they obviously increased the gearing, which for the road is a good thing, so in reality may be slower than they seem.
Increased confidence too with so much rubber on the road.
Yea it's not really about size, it's about tread
I've had Schwalbe G-One Speed in 700 x 50mm before and they were brilliant on the road for longer ambling rides, and also great offroad on rocky/gravelly stuff (not on mud, obviously)
It's about rim width as well, probably.
I also have the 45mm Raddlers, but they don't come up that big on my 19mm internal rims. I do really like them though.
As above, low-tread XC tyres on 25mm-ish internal width rims might be the answer?
Can confirm that Racekings are super fast and pretty good off road, if you ride actual trails (bridleways etc).
I’ve been impressed with the terravail Rutland in 47. Currently on cannonballs in 47 which we used for some touring
I've got 45c WTB Riddlers on my gravel/monstercross bike. Done some quite lumpy off-road stuff on them but they're pretty fast rolling on road.
I did a 70km mostly road ride on them last week and averaged 23.5kmh for the ride. Probably 2-3kmh under what I'd do on my road bike (but that's a lot lighter with 28c tyres!)
Also very good tubeless - no issues going or staying up.
As above, really like the Teravail Cannonballs in 47c, one i would avoid is WTB Venture 50c if you live anywhere flinty or similar, the main tread is like lots of little closely packed "fins" and the bits of grit and flint where i live would stay in tread and work there way in slowly to puncture.
An I missing something here, or has the clearance on the OPs bike not been mentioned (making the rest of the comments potentially pointless)?
50c panaracer gravel kings on my ridgid MTB/ gravel/ commuter bike.
Fat and comfy!
45mm WTB Raddlers
I thought that only Riddlers came I'm 45mm, and the Raddlers were 44?
Anyway, I've been through skinny G Ones to 2.25 WTB Rangers, but have settled on 44mm Raddlers. The absolute sweet spot for me.
He said he had lots of clearance
I was hoping for something more specific than that - after all, most of us have been passed by a motorist who thought they'd left lots of room...
