Currently I've got a CS-HG-10 11-36T cassette, GRX600 crankset with 46-30T chainrings and a GRX400 rear derailleur.
I'm finding the lowest gear is still too high for some of my local climbs and my knees are suffering.
Shimano state max tooth size for the RD is 36T but I believe they are very conservative with this rating.
So, whats the most cost effective way of reducing the gearing?
try it as is, but could likely just add a goatlink or rip-off if needed - assuming your mech can handle the extra capacity needed for the bigger cassette
I watched a couple of videos on this yesterday for 11 speed grx and it looked like 40t yes but at 42t it didn’t work. That was without a roadlink.
I've got 40t without a goat link

Is that 10 speed?
On 11 speed grx a number of us have fitted 11-40 with no extra link and no issues.
Ah, 11sp
Can you fit a small front chainring (as well)?

Seems the front derailleur has a 16T capacity, so no - it would appear I can't add a smaller front chainring (unless I replaced both chain rings but anything less than 46T is gonna be too low at the top end)

I think you'd be fine to go to 26t to replace the 30t. On my triple I went from 30/40/52 to 26/40/52 with no issues.
Seems a smaller front chainring is not an option (due to no one making anything smaller in that BCD)
There is a SunRace 10 speed, 11-40T cassette though...any thoughts before I press the "Buy" button? Bit of a boat anchor but not sure whether there's any other options.
Apparently, I'll need a new, longer chain as well
I have a Deore 40 or 42 cassette on 2x 10 grx, it runs fine. I have a sun race cassette on my fs, it doesn’t shift as well as shimano.
Used SLX and Sunrace on gravel bikes and haven't noticed and difference.
GRX600 here, 46/30 up front with 11-40 cassette.
Seems fine so far

👍
Is that with a SunRace cassette?
SLX or XT - new bike built by local shop (I've forgotten exactly which cassette it was)
I've only done a 30 mile ride on it so far
Done 1300miles with SLX 11-40 cassette running grx400 rear mech as 1x11 speed, no link needed. Any larger might need it, and sunrace mech extender for £9 better value than wolf tooth stuff. Works well without issue.
I've picked up a bigger cassette, so I'm going from 11-36 to 11-40.
I've also got a new chain - so how many extra links will the new chain need over the old one?
I presume I'll also need to change the B-screw tension - so that means screwing the screw in, so it pushes the mech out to clear the biggest cog. Correct?

Useful to know, thanks!
there are some YouTube vids on fitting 11-40 to GRX 2x

Well, having watched a couple of those, it seems fairly straightforward 👍
Post up when you get it running, debating how to move my Fargo from 3x10 to something with the same range but hydraulic brakes, I occasionally need the bail out gear since I don’t ride hills often enough to have the legs for them. Currently 48-36-26 with 11-36, so about 20 gear inches.
I’ve also got a new chain – so how many extra links will the new chain need over the old one?
That'll depend on how long the chainstays are ón your bike
No idea on 2 x but running 11-51 with a 40t ring without extender so I'd have thought 40t sprocket should be fine with 2x
