I'm considering putting together a commuter that can cope with the horrendous Herefordshire road surfaces while also being up for a bit of fireroad action if the urge takes me on the way home. Trouble is, with a new nipper in Burnside Towers, the budget is er, a bit "micro"...
As I've also fancied a 29er for a while I thought I might kill two avians with a monolith and put one together, perhaps with "commuter" tyres and swap in something burlier for regular trail use. I've got the transmission and finishing kit in the spares bin but need what the kids these days are calling a "rolling chassis": frame, fork and wheels.
On-One sell a Scandal frame in fetching Racing Green for £150, hilariously clashing lime green carbon monocoque fork for £100 and M1 rims on M525 hubs for £130. While accepting that I could get a cheaper, steel fork if I was less of a tart, I wondered if I could do better elsewhere? Any advice?
Also worth a look on Merlin for 29er wheels. They currently have 525 with Sun Inferno rims for £80.Carbon cycles have their Exotic branded carbon forks which could be a similarly priced alternative.
Cheap Diamondback 29er off eBay? £300.
Bump.
Thanks for the replies chaps. Merlin looks v good indeed for the wheels. Anyone else?
Other default cheap 29er choice is Voodoo. Very cheap, especially if you catch one of the regular sales...
on my way to school at the moment J, but will in touch tomorrow. I might be able to help you out with some bits
