Off to Morocco soon. Unsure what spares to take really so looking for some advice.
Will definitely take spare mech hanger, gear cable, brake pads, sealant, tubes, couple of chain links. What else should I consider? Rear mech, tyre?
My bike is a 27.5 Bossnut Evo and i'm a relatively gentle rider rather than smashing off stuff (although I understand the trip is more XC and culture than hardcore downhill).
Anyone else been with them and can offer some tips/advice for anything else I should consider?
Thanks.
Last big trip I took a set of spare brakes I had lying around as I had space in the bags and ended up using them. Took a rear mech didn’t need it on that trip though. Spokes might be handy to have too - got rinsed for a replacement one for the wife’s bike on the same trip.
My last trip to Morocco (a good few years ago) I managed to strip the internals of my 8 speed XT rapidfire shifter on the very first ride. We fashioned a home made friction shifter out of the remaining parts and a small block of wood. Pack a bag of ingenuity.
Cleat bolts, Mrs lost one of those, can be replaced with a disc bolt though
Not Morocco, but should still be relevant, my spares pack list for out upcoming NZ trip is;
Chain
Mech
Mech hanger
gear cables
sealant
brake fluid
spokes
tubes
bag of a selection of bolts
IF we have headroom in space and weight, i might throw a tyre in also.
I would take a fat, lightweight air mat for use in the gites. Some of the sleeping pads supplied are pretty basic. And some decent coffee / an aeropress if you're that way inclined.
Otherwise the obvious consumables. And maybe a tyre. I can't remember if they had any group spare tyres, but it's an obvious option if you're fussy about your rubber. There's a fair amount of rock about, it's very like southern Spain in riding terms but redder and it would be pretty easy to trash a tyre.
You could drop a line to Simon and see what he suggests. I don't know what they have by way of communal spares, from memory the only thing I actually needed was brake pads, swapped in five minutes over a lunch stop.
Great place to ride, you'll love it. Unless it snows... don't ask how I know etc.
Make sure you bolt check and service the bike before you go. Also bolt checks and a once over every evening/at lunch stops to be sure nothing will come off.
Hi,
I rode down from the Atlas Mountains to the coast in March a few years ago and apart from the spares listed above - think carefully about the clothing. It was seriously cold up in the mountains early AM but baking by lunchtime. Lots of lightweight but warm layers that you can lose during the day should make it more enjoyable.
Enjoy your trip - I'm jealous!
P.S. be prepared to be raced through villages you might visit by kids on frankenbikes (and be prepared to lose)!
Thanks for the above replies. Had a great trip.
