Any good reasons not to consider this tent?
Although I already have a couple of lightweight tents, I have bit of a "need" for something else. I'd like it to be more robust than my Lunar Solo in inclement weather (hence considering freestanding/semi freestanding designs) but more packable than my Scarp 1, as I want to carry it on my gravel bike and there's no way to shorten the packed length of the Scarp.
I inevitably started by looking at the Trekkertent Saor, was distracted by the DCF version at £720, and am now thinking that £400 for the Copper Spur suddenly doesn't look that expensive 🤣
You can never have too many tents. I'm pretty sure the Chinese brands do an almost exact copy at a fraction of the price. The Big Agnes tents are very popular with US bikepackers, so are well tested. My current favourite from my collection is the Wechsel Bella 1.5 - packs small, up and down in seconds, erects as one unit.
Same size Big Agnes Tiger Wall is semi freestanding, slightly lighter, but don't know if that's sufficiently robust for you. Although it seems like you can pick it up for less than 300.
Big agnes are cut high at the sides for ventilation so more drafty and cold in Scottish conditions. Otherwise a good reputation.
I've been looking at these too. On paper they look great. I can't speak from experience though.
If you don't mind orange (not very stealth) Sportpursuit have some on for cheap I think
Sportpursuit have some, they have the HV UL Copper Spur for £225
Yeah as TJ says, check the height of the fly above ground. There's a few with quite high cuts. Lighter but not ideal in Scotland
The Copper Spur fly seems to be normal height. I've seen some models/brands with the cutaway sides and I reckon they're not for me (and neither is bright orange 😀 )
I have the bikepacking version of the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2, it has shorter pole sections than the standard one.
It seems fairly robust and well made, fly comes down to the ground.
Not sure how useful this is as it's a much bigger tent and had it a while, but we've had a 4 person Copper Spur in Ontario since about 2014 and used it regularly for summer/autumn canoe and campsite camping for 2 adults plus 2 kids (currently 11 and 8); had a long backpacking/rail travel trip in the US in 2022 where we used it for a few weeks although not continuously. Generally it's been excellent, very lightweight for the space and durability and I'd say the build quality is very good. Would echo the comments about the fly removed link The one night I do recall with very heavy rain and high winds in the US it definitely flexed a lot but kept us dry and didn't sustain any damage. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
You might want to look at alpkit ultra 1. Which looks pretty equivalent. I've been really impressed with their tents, our Ordos is 7 years old and used a lot. It's a little lighter too.
