What are you lot wearing riding then?

Back in my roadie days it was a no-brainer. Bib shorts and a jersey, because if you're cracking along doing serious miles the aero does make a difference, and in duck-shoes you already look like an idiot, so no harm in going the whole hog and dressing like an TDF wannabe.

I'm a bit more lost on what to wear on the mountain bike, though. Jeans / baggies and a t-shirt are okay for hitting a bit of local single-track, but not really suitable for proper riding. Similarly though I don't want to look like this:

As above picture - but with less "in your face" fluoro colors. Plain black with a bit of colour here and there.

Personally I really like bamboo tops. I've got about 5. My favourite three are from Broken Riders,, in greys and an auberginey purple. They do hold the sweat a bit, but as a material it's really comfortable.

Madison 4 season DWR shorts. They've got a full length zip down the leg with some mesh venting.

I try and stay away from the power ranger look.

Currently using an olive green Oakley helmet, muted jerseys (blue, dark red etc), olive green Fox shorts, olive green fox gloves, grey kneepads, grey shoes.

If I fell in a bush/concrete area I'd be invisible.

Ignore the dodgy jumping skills.

Bugger, I have that top! but not the shorts, I usually rock it with black shorts. I have a mix of muted or bright coloured shorts and tops, I dont pair them so will wear bright top with black shorts or bright shorts with dull top.

I recently picked up a few short sleeve and long sleeve troy lee tops from various online shops for what I consider to be a reasonable price, £15 ss and £30 ls. All my shorts are pearl izumi summit, I really like the tapered cut and slim fit with the stretchy fabric.

Defo cased that jump

Oh god yes. That was on a Jedi coaching day, was happy to be clearing a 6ft gap half way into the day, but the 30+ degrees was a killer so technique went to pot later on!

Very few pics of me riding exist though.

I choose things that are deliberately not logo'd up so much.

All my shorts are black or grey.

I also wear a fair bit of generic outdoor or running gear. For example my latest top is a (superb) Asics long sleeve wicking top in plain red with a few reflective bits and a zip neck.

If you look at what Ta11Pau1 is wearing, it's the same as the top pic but less crazy colours. This is pretty much what most people wear. So just wear that if you don't have your own particular style in mind.

Pretty much all shorts are grey or black, as we ride in the UK & it's muddy & the sh*tty arse look is not a great one. Either them or the same, but trouser format.

Top half is mostly riding brand tech tees. Unless racing & wear the team jersey I race for. Mostly muted colours, as I don't want to look ridiculous.

I'd say proper mountain bike shorts are the essential. With your preferred combo of built in padding or no padding with padded boxers. If you get black they won't get ruined in the mud and can match with any top.

Tops wise any sporty top will do. I prefer bike specific kit but always wait for a sale. If you've got the budget merino tops like Mons Royale are the pinnacle. Although their range can be a bit heavy on logos.
Tech Ts are definitely the way for local rides, especially in lock down when we can't be hitting the gnar, or for going to the pub post ride when we can.

What is "proper riding"?

Most of my dh tops look a bit baggy as they are sized for armour underneath. For xc I just use my long armed lidl ones which are not tight fitting.

Lycra.
As, as irrelevant of how it looks, it’s the most comfortable and practical thing to wear on a bike.

I think he/she refers to a longer ride, rather than the level of mincing it entails.

Lycra is not practical for me, I appreciate others prefer it, no worries.

Longer than what? I'm a bit anxious that I might not have been doing it properly.

Faded dark earth, desert tan, khaki, foliage brown, coyote brown, OD green , ranger green, sage green.

Generally always black baggies and whatever Alpinestars jersey is going for buttons on CRC (for some reason they are always heavily discounted despite being quite nicely made)

Although I've just got a blue helmet, rather than black, so might have to avoid garish combinations.

So after buying some new kit recently, I seem to have inadvertently/subconsciously/accidentally bought the same colour stuff...

My Fox ranger shorts are green.
My New Oakly DRT5 helmet is green.
My Fox ranger gloves are green.
And my new delivered today MT500 jacket is, you've guessed it, green (choice was black or green)

Bugger.

Good job I've also just bought a pair of red Fox ranger shorts! Need a new pair of gloves too so I'll get them in another colour but green.

I’m a bit more lost on what to wear on the mountain bike, though.

Plenty of of stuff available in plain colours. But remember, on a mountain bike you "rock" not "wear". Apparently.
