Planing on taking my bike to uni. Its worth about 1000 quid. The college at my uni have a bicycle shed but obviously i will need insurance if i leave it locked up there. I also have the option of keeping it in my room, but this is a bit of a faff as im on the 3rd floor and the rooms are small.

What's the best/cheapest way of keeping it safe?? (best insurance companies is what im after basically)

When I was at Uni the bike sheds were like a candy store for bike thieves. I would suggest that you get a £70 Asda Special for commuting duties, and keep it in the bike shed and keep your pride and joy in your room.

Spray the Asda special matt black and make it look really Shiite, scratches gaffer tape etc. then, hopefully the scrotes will go for another one!

I've been keeping my bikes in my room for years and the porters here are normally OK with it providing you don't take the mick. Keep it on-the-sly and don't destroy the place with mud/tyre marks ... or if you do, the clean it up. If worst comes to, just explain that its worth a lot of money and why you don't want to leave it outside!

Also, you may have to hide it for room inspections as they are technically against fire regulations. Its amazing how small a bike is when its in component parts. I've managed to fit one in my wardrobe behing my clothes and one under my bed. 🙂

If they do question it then give common sense responses. "Its out of the way so no one can trip over it." "Its in small parts so its out of the way." etc. And hope they are not having a bad day.

You should be fine.

Keep it in a bike bag in your room?

I kept two behind my door at uni. Just locked them up outside for a morning when an inspection was due. That was third floor too.

Insurance - either on your contents as named item, or take your chances. Bike specific insurance costs and arm and a leg.

If you bike is away from your usual place of residence (parents?) for less than 6 months at a time it may be covered under their policy.

+1 for keeping it in your room in a bike bag or get a delivery cardboard box from your friendly LBS. Despite not being allowed bikes in rooms while I was in halls I had 2 in there using the box method!
