I need some new MTB bibs to wear under my baggies and thinking a set with storage would work for me so i don't need to take a hip pack with me all the time.
I'll be carrying a mini-pump, multitool, inhaler, phone and maybe shoving my small packing waterproof in too
What would folk recommend?

Not sure if you will fit all that in, but morevelo and raphe are the main ones.

I've got Specialized Swat bibs and really like them. The newer pair, which are still at least 2 years old have bigger pockets. I've managed to get pump, multi tool, tubeless repair kit, spares pouch and a gilet in in the pockets.

I have a few years old Spesh SWAT bib which will need replacing soon, new SWAT bibs are £90 or Trek/Bontrager do a similar version for £60, its called the Troslo (linky)

Race face ones are also pretty good. I’ve got the older ones and cut fabric away where the bladder pocket was, they’re very comfy. The newer versions seem to be a better design too

My original Specialized ones are still going well. Starting to shoe theor age (many years) now but still fine for riding in

new SWAT bibs are £90

Bloody hell, so they are! I think I paid £50 for the first pair and £60 for the second which included a pair of baggies that I sold on for about £20. The Bonty ones look good, so do the Nukeproofs.

Those La Passione ones look nice.

The Castelli Unlimited ones are very nice, I've got a pair for days out on the gravel bike.

Morvelo Overlanders are great, they are my go-to big day shorts.

I had a water bottle + mini pump in one pocket and a tool bottle in another this morning (was trying to diagnose a rattle so was riding with empty bottle cages).

If you're careful with which version you order you can get them with two pockets or three.

Endura Singletrack bibs seem to do the job - ~£60 at Wiggle

How much of that do you want to cram into a pair of bibs?
I would put most of that in to jersey pockets for a road bike ride as I don't plan for any OTB moments, offroad I never like the idea of multi tools or mini pumps around my back.

7Mesh do two bibs with pockets, the Foundation and the MK3. Got some older MK2's (no pockets) which are ace and the new Foundation with pockets, can't notice a difference in comfort from the pad, but the Foundation is significantly cooler thanks to the largely mesh construction. My MK2's are over 2 years old and are still going strong, it's lovely kit and well worth the price.

All of it. That's kind of the point of this thread
I'll be putting things in the pockets when riding xc/easy local trails. I use a hip-pack for tech

Love my Yeti storage bibs, really well designed. Numerous pockets including a water resistant on that's actually big enough for a smartphone.

I've got Pearl Izumi cargo bibs: really light mesh, great pad, plenty of pockets, thumbs up

Specialized original SWAT are brilliant. Sadly I can't recommend the morvelo Stealth at all. The pockets are far too low. Using the morvelo stealth bottles with morvelo RAD baggies is an exercise in frustration. They just don't work, which is a shame as the pads are excellent.

Interesting there's so much choice but I highly rate the Specialized SWAT.

I too like the Specialized SWAT, however I notice a big difference in temperature vs just a riding jersey. It makes me feel very hot on a warm day.

Assos trail bibs can be found for £90 at the moment - I've bought two pairs at that price. really excellent chamois - good for all day

I too find this, I just assumed it was part and parcel of wearing bib shorts though! The Pearl Izumi mesh mentioned ones mentioned sounded good but are £90 too, but so are the Movelo ones with the La passions being £115!

Actually, I will chuck in a negative for the PI cargo mesh bibs - they do have, handily, a 'pee slit/flap' in the front - should be quite handy as the bibs sit quite high up the torso (I guess to accommodate pockets at the back).

This flap is, however, far closer to my solar plexus than it is to my penis, and calls me to ask some significant questions as to the anatomy of the designers.

How are you all getting along with overlap between the pockets in the shorts and the waistband of baggies.? I tried the Rapha ones and the Sportful Giara ones and the pockets in both were too low, waistband of baggies was right across the pockets which is obviously pretty uncomfortable.

I ended up going with the Morvelo Overlander base layer which has pockets in the back like a road jersey, fits nice and snug so stuff doesn't rattle around on your back and the pockets are big enough for an iPhone XR which none of the shorts could hold well enough for me not to worry about it leaping out into the undergrowth.

The Overlander base layer is quite warm though and I'd love to find a pair of shorts that could hold what I need (phone, a couple of energy bars and a spare tube, everything else is on the bike).  Are the pockets in the SWAT or the Bontrager shorts (or any of the others mentioned) high enough.?

I dont like doing it even on a road bike!!
These bibs sound like an awful idea to me!

I've a pair of these which are a bit small so have only used them twice but seem well made etc.

If a mediums any use they'd be priced fairly!

I have the Galibier ones which are great but they only have leg side pockets, not the back ones. As comfy as Rapha Pro Team I find and £60.

No issue at all. Race face and Specialized both sit over the top of the waistband

Thought I'd bring this one back from the dead as my SWATs are nearing the end of life now. Options seem to have changed now though;

- Specialized SWAT, still available
- Race Face Stash, no longer have back pockets
- Morvelo, gone
- Endura Singletrack II, looks like the pockets have to go inside the waistband of the baggies?
- Rapha, same as Endura + the price
- Assos, look ok
- Nuke Proof, bought a pair and returned them (iirc) as they didn't seem well made

Anything new out there thats worth a look?

The Yeti Enduro Bib is excellent, but pricy and available in limited sizes from silverfish.

I've got the POC mesh bib under shorts and the Specialized SWAT and had the Endura. I like the POC mesh but wished they had the pockets of the Specialized SWAT. I bought the Endura shorts a few months ago then ended up giving them away as I absolutely hated the fit of them.

– Morvelo, gone

Not a recommendation or otherwise as I haven’t tried them but Morvelo now sell those under their ‘Overland’ brand

I can imagine. I’m a small for Endura tops, at least a medium for base layers (their guide says I’m XS, thought I was going to have to be cut out of a S!) and I can’t even remember what I am for shorts, but a mate was having weird fit issues recently with his baggies. Don’t think I could be arsed bothering with them again, which irks me as I’d be happy supporting the local folk

I have the roam cargo, the three back pockets are great for when it gets too warm & you need to fully unzip your jersey rendering the pockets useless. Do however, if putting your phone in the back pocket put it in something sweatproof

Whilst the concept of cargo bibs doesn't appeal to me, I'd like to suggest that the Galibier cargo bibs are added to the list.

I've bought several of their products now, and am very impressed with the price, quality and customer service

If you want liner shorts, madison is the go to, just for the name- Flux Capacity…

I like the Roam roadie shorts too.

I got the Rapha ones a while back and they're great, the brevet rather than core. Not cheap but excellent quality and the pockets on the legs are great for phone/ snacks etc. I only really regularly use leg pockets and the back pockets only on occasions where I'm taking extra stuff but they were ok paired with my morvelo overland shorts. The only issue I'd have with the bibs are that the legs are a little long as I'm a shortarse.

My SWAT bibs needed replacing earlier this year and I was looking at getting the Bontrager Troslo, but found a pair of SWATs in Belarus so ordered those instead.

Treks might be next though as decent price with SWAT bibs going up in price and look very similar.

@burko73 - I don't think that this applies to their cargo shorts, but the Galibier peleton bib shorts come in three different leg lengths, which attracted me, as I also have short legs.
Very pleased with mine - good fit, comfy pad, and very competitively priced

+1 for the Nukeproof ones, still going strong after a few years.

Also had a pair of Sombrio ones a while back however the pockets were quite fragile and quickly developed holes.

Anyone do them with a zipped pocket for keys or even phones?

Yes, I’m paranoid.

You could hold me upside down by my ankles and nothing would fall out of my Rapha cargo. I do put my phone and key in a (rapha obviously) purse that makes everything snug and waterproof.

I know.

Still paranoid.

I have the Rapha winter cargo tights (end of season deal) and they have two zipped and two open pockets.

Just wondered if any of the shorts out there were similar.

Having landed on my side with an asthma inhaler in my pocket, there's no way I'd have one (or a pump or multitool) in a back pocket. How about sticking the minipump on the frame and putting the other hard bits in a small top-tube bag?

Just had a look on the Morvelo site, and is it just me, or does it look a bit sparse? They seemed to have almost no MTB stuff (just a couple of jerseys) almost all of it is roadie stuff, even the overland part has huge gaps in stock.

Are they on hard times?

There's been a bit of a supply chain crisis in recent months pretty much everywhere. Nandos running out of chicken doesn't affect me, but cycle kit does.

I bought the Endura Singletrack 2's in the end. As with others I've had fit issues, mainly the length of the body pulling down on my shoulders.
It's well made and the pockets and chammy are great, but if you are long in the body then look elsewhere.

I'll be looking at other options

I’ve a pair of the Maddison Flux - they’re very good (better than the much more expensive Gore equivalent) and are fine being worn by themselves.

Can anyone tell me if the Madison roam have hip pockets as well as back pockets, hot the flux and a good fit but may return for the roams if they have more storage options, won't need both
