Is bib tights under baggy shorts a good idea for mountain biking?
And can anyone recommend any reasonable price ones worth buying?

I currently have some Endura Hummvee shorts which came with a padded liner but I find the liner doesn't sit well on me and the pad constantly shifts forwards as I ride and bunches up and offers no padding on my sit bones.

Of course it is!

Even more so on longer rides.

The best budget bibs IMO for this are these Zipvit ones: top quality but so garish you need the baggies! They were recommended on here a few times and now I agree.

Otherwide: look at DHB ones, Castelli on sale (size up).

Bib tights without the baggy’s are even better. All the comfort and no flapping.

DHB Roubaix 3/4 bibs here - occasionally under shorts.

It's a step in the right direction but still a bit poor tbh, but I guess most people like baggies so feel like they need to be worn.
Decathlon do very good value bibs - 500s more than adequate if you're going to insist on wearing a pair of shorts over the top. The 900s are great, although they've just had a rebrand I believe and are now called something different.

It's about time they stopped being called baggies tbh, all of my shorts are well fitted, don't flap about or catch on anything, and unlike folks in lycra, they don't make you look like a bloody weirdo!.

🤣

Yes. Endura, Craft and Galibier here. Worn without baggies on the road bike too.

You’re an adult on a push bike, you look weird anyway.
Joking aside, Decathlon is where to go. The top end stuff is brilliant.

No pockets either, and in my typical riding conditions I’m glad of the extra layer.

I think you can find some pro kit replica bargains if you’re not bothered about colour.

My bibs have pockets and in a useable place on the back.

Pockets in baggies are normally badly positioned though my TLD Ruckus work well - even so I don't use the pockets very often.

Bib shorts and especially bib tights make cycling.

Most bibs I've owned hace had a low enough front and are stretchy enough you can get your old chap out pretty easily.

Cheap DHB bibs under various Endura shorts here too. Dunno why I didn't try earlier, much more comfortable than thin liners with those annoying fasteners that never seem to stay up.

Another vote for thin bibs under light shorts - comfy, and doesn’t scare the children. If i’m not wearing knee pads, I generally use 3/4 length tights to cover my knees. I find it much comfier than the liners that come with baggies.
Going for a piss isn’t a problem - you just yank down the front and flop the fella out over the top.

lunge speaks truth.

But baggies cover my gut, arse, package, keys and phone. Can live with the flap.

Remember being young and skinny with nothing but a pair of Lusso 3/4 bibs and some shoes, all summer-long. Add tee for autumn or evenings. Heaven.

This is a good reminder to get rid of all the endura liners I don’t use any more. Bibs FTW.

Always wear bibs under baggies... and there's a very good reason why.
On the last bank holiday Monday in the UK, I went for a spin on my own on the full suss... fully bibbed up with Endura baggies over the top.

Went down a technical single track which was pretty steep and twisty plus recently tree cleared by the forestry commission... so lots of stumps and log stacks off line. Managed to get the front wheel stuck in a water gully rut the perfect width of my tyre on a corner and went OTB.

As I went up and over the left hand end of my bars came round and dug into my groin (bar ends were shot so pretty much bare alu)... I then pivoted over the top being skewered... the only reason I didnt pierce my danglies was my bibs helped keep them out of the way.

One very black groin, smashed up thigh, muscle lump on elbow and smashed calf I walked away and carried on my ride not realising what had quite happened. Ended up being 2 weeks off bike but at least everything was still functional.

Thank b*lls for bibs 😉

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have decided to go for a pair of DHB bib tights. Seemed good value at £25 on sale.

Tights? As we approach the solstice? Now, I know it’s not the greatest summer but it’s not that cold! 😂

Even by STW standards, that's just bizarre!.

True, but with shorts it's just a weird look, instead of the full blown rapist look of tights! 🤣

Endura do some bibs with the clickfast poppers, lots of mesh panels, and a slot to stick your dick out of for taking a piss.

Endura do some bibs with the clickfast poppers,

How useful is that though (a few other brands also have stripes etc. For connecting baggies to bibs)? Mine don’t; am I missing out?

Specialized and pearl izumi do some bib liners with small storage pockets on the back, which are quite handy (I am sure other do to, but these are the ones I am aware of).

As to why baggies, because they stand up better to brambles and wipouts in my experience.

ugh, lucky escape!
For similar reasons, I'll always wear baggies: I came off some woodwork on nearby trails, that ran across a small ravine. I fell into the ravine, landing on some branches. Got up to realise that a large broken branch had skewered my front pocket, ripping a hole in my Endura baggy shorts, and hit my mobile phone. I was a bit dazed, but it gives me the willies thinking about how far said branch would've gone into my groinal region if it hadn't hit the phone - which was only there because my shorts have pockets!
