I've been loosely contemplating changing my blender frame for a BFE...problem is I love everything about my blender, the only thing I'm looking to improve is pedalability and climbing. I don't want to lose any of the fun, flickability or stability.

First of anybody ridden both to provide a direct comparison? Is there even gona be a notable difference? Secondly do I go xs 14.5" (same length stays longer top tube shorter seat tube) or small (same length stays longer top tube longer seat tube)

I'm 5"9".

Cheers.

Based on what Paul advised when I bought my XS BFe, you might be better off with a S. I'm 5'6" (EDIT - or 167cm if you prefer).

Email Cotic with your current bikes measurements (I sent them a labelled photo), proper helpful blokes.

I'm 167 cm. Xs bfe was perfect.

Cheers, its currently small frames I'm looking at, but wanted to check, anyone ridden both a cotic and a blender for comparison?

Go for the small. The XS won't be hugely more practical than the Blender, the small with its extra seat tube and top tube length will at least be that bit more practical.

FWIW, I'm an inch or so taller than you, and I had a small BFe, and to be honest, should have got a medium! The small with a 50mm stem was too short for me, it would have needed a 70mm or longer stem (which wouldn't have been ideal for what I wanted it for) to get a decent reach whereas the Medium would have fitted me better.

Cheers mboy, do you think it will be a better all rounder? I.e pedal better but still sharp handling for 4x and stable for DH tracks?

The measurements on the charge site are fairly useless. They dont state whether its actual or effective top tube. But, the top tube length is a bit shorter than the XS BFe's.

But, due to the stupidly slack blender seat tube, the front centre length will be even shorter. So I'd say you'd be about right on a 14". Just use a 410mm seatpost.

But saying that, if you want to predominantly use it for sitting down and riding xc on then the 16 may be a better bet.

Definitely

The Blender is a 4X specialist, and pretty compromised for anything else. The BFe is a jack of all trades, same geometry as the Soul and Soda (which are brilliant bikes too) but stiffer and stronger and can take a longer fork if you wished. Personally though, the handling gets a bit too slack with much longer than a 120mm fork on. But for what you say you want, a bike with the capabilities of the Blender but more all round capability too, I think the BFe would be a very good choice.

I'm 5'9 with a small BFe it's a perfect fit I find. I tried an XS and it felt too much like a toy. The S felt like 'my' bike right away.

I'm 5'10" and I have a medium as recommended by Paul at Cotic. Fits perfectly and it's a great all round bike up, sideways and down hill. I have 150/120 dual position forks which work brilliantly.

Cheers mboy (and others) my fear is changing and regretting it, can't see that happening but the blender is my first proper mtb and just feels so right most of the time but it does become cramped on the longer rides and on climbs.

What forks have you got on the blender?
Have you played around with the setup such as moving the seat forward or different seat post?

That would make it even more cramped.

For what its worth, most people on here will use their BFe's for mincing round trail centres with. It sounds like you're into the sort of riding the BFe was intended for. Take all replies with a pinch of salt.

Especially this one

172cm tall and found the small BFe to be a good fit with a 50mm stem, but hurt my back a bit climbing mountains due to the stiffness and being slightly cramped (and a history of bike-related self harm).

Was nice and stable in the air and built into a (poss. too) light bike which was a lot of fun for doing most things on until I killed it dead

What length forks and stem do you have on the Blender?

Rob, how did you manage that? Come up short on a gap/double or head on into a tree?!

Used to run pikes 120-140 most of the time except for BMX tracks where I ran them at 100. Recently brought some Fox Float 36's and have set them at 140 (30mm sag)

65mm stem, 735mm wide bars, straight Thompson seat post.

Here is a pic:

Landed a drop a bit squiffy, slid down hill and ****ted tree with the bottom of the front wheel.
Headset & BB cups were a bugger to get out as the frame deformed all over the place and the forks are now only good for attacking burglars.

Nipped the saddle from the rails with my balls too - freaking painful that was!

Once I'd stopped rolling around on the ground I was amazed at the shape of the frame, reckon if it did it to a BFe it would have done it to most frames.

Running forks that are too long!

Hey! I quite liked them at 130mm. At 160 it handled like a bag of spanners though 🙂

Well, if you get the Xsmall, you'll be able to tuck your knees across the top tube properly for table tops.

The thing about the Blender is the reach (BB to headset horizontal) is very short (short top tube plus slack seat tube) but then it has a slack head angle to extend the front centre to get the stability and balance vs chainstay length. A small BFe will be longer in the top tube but steeper in head angle and I suspect you'll find the steeper head angle livens up the longer bike. With the extra length of the BFe there's flexibility to run a shorter stem (I use a 50mm on a Soul) if you're missing the rearwards stance the Blender causes.

The Blender looks awesome for sprinting (short but tall like a BMX) and blasting downhill (basically 4X bike) but I bet an XS BFe would be a better jump bike and a S BFe be close enough for jumping/sprinting/DH whilst still pedalling uphill decently.

@rob - ouch ! Quite a good ad for the wheel though, frame and forks bent but wheel in tact.

@nwill - can you get the BFe and transfer the components across, then if you don't like it you can switch back. A BFe frame will be pretty easy to sell on.

Thanks chiefgrooveguru makes sence, and jambalaya that's the plan, I certainly won't sell the blender until I'm sure (if I go ahead), could be the best move or an expensive mistake but I'm fairly confident it wouldn't be.

I had a small BFe and at 5'9" it felt ok for jumping etc. Would have preferred the xs for that sort of thing though, but then the TT would be too short to be of much use pedalling around on. Nice frame but not for me, felt a bit dead and boring to ride. I have more fun on my Trailstar.
