Took the CdF out for a spin along Wiltshire bridleways today. Two punctures in 26 miles 🙁 on the standard tyres ( Conti Cylecross Race 35mm). Can anyone recommend something similar for muddy/stony tracks which are a bit more resilient. I've been running it on Panaracer Tourguard Plus 28's over the summer, but was on road much more than off, and I expect that they won't be as good offroad over winter..
One good thing about the Contis was that they are really easy to get on and off, but I expect that I'll have to sacrifice some of that.
Also, I'm running Zefal Croozer and Swan guards, rather than proper bolt on (e.g. SKS) guards. Whats the largest tyre I could fit?
Or should I just get a 29er 🙂 ?
cheers
The 35c CrossSpeeds on my Croix de Fer have held up well. Also got some small block 8's and for more tecky stuff a set of crossking cx (only used a few times so far)
I struggled with the Conti's on my CdF too. Now using 35c Smart Sams and very happy with them. Just ordered another to replace a worn out rear.
I also used 35c Smart Sams on my Croix De Fer. Can get them for about £30-ish a pair of you shop around.
A little bit weighty, but that's cause they wire bead. Thing is, when you consider what they are strapped to, that doesn't really matter.
...I do wish they did a folding version, tho. As that would be my perfect all rounder.
2 punctures in 26 miles could be chance as easily as tyre weakness.

Yep. I had three today, two of which were on a bridleway section of my road/gravel loop. Hedge [s]trimming[/s] killing had occurred, and that was the problem, not my tyres.
Gah! Those conti tyres are made of cheese. Worst tyres for punctures. Small block 8s are a tad better but a bit more draggy, especially on tarmac.
