I looked hard at the Giant Defy 3 after asking the same question on here, general consensus is that it's a cracking option.

Tomkerton- what cx did you go for ? This a possible for me to.
CAADX disc with Tiagra.
Cost just less than 1K.
Got nothing to compare it with because I've never ridden anything remotely roady before. I did some bridle paths with it last year with 35mm treaded tyres which it coped with fine but it's had 28mm Gatorskins on for the last 6 months, been doing 60-80 miles a week, no problems whatsoever. Smashed some potholes, fallen off a couple of times and not broke it! Fits mudguards.

Try searching eBay for CAAD. - if you choose carefully there are some great 2nd hand Cannondales to be had for a few hundred which you could update and would give excellent performance
