For me it's the Specialized all condition armadillo elite. It would be nice if they were a bit faster but they're very reliable and grippy.
Have a look on road.cc they have an article/feature that pretty much answers this.
But not really - its real world use that counts.
For example, I've recently got two punctures on Vittoria Open Paves which I put on the bike 10 days ago. I used them once in Flanders with no issue 2 years ago, but but they don't seemed to be up to use in the Home Counties and feel rock hard to ride on at 95 psi, coming from GP4000 2's...
Why would you put 95psi into Pave's?
I like either GP4 Season or Vredestein TriComp (variants) for winter. There is the new all weather Dunlop tyre?
Continental Grand Prix GT
Black chilli so lots of grip and roll well, GT version for a bit more puncture resistance, and cheap!
I honestly don't think you can beat GP4000's for winter usage. Grip well, pretty puncture resistant (compared to Pave's), roll well, comfy and last a decent length of time.
I've done 4seasons, Open Paves, Rubinos (speed+ ones), Corsa's, Turbos, Challenge Strada's and so on and I keep going back to GP4000's every time. The only ones I wouldn't mind trying next are the new Pirelli ones as they seem to get good reviews
i like duranos. conti 4 seasons are supposed to be similar - but never used them...
Michelin Pro 4 Service Course?, or Pro 4 endurance?
Otherwise I may be back to the inexpensive Lithion 2 over expensive GP All seasons...
+1 for Vredestein TriComp (variants) a very good tyre which I use on my commuter, but on mine the tyres have developed a lot of small cracks. Nothad any adverse effects on the tyres and I bought more to do a like for like replacement
If you think Paves are rock hard you wont like Armadillos or Gatorskins!!
Continental Grand Prix GT
+1
Going into second winter, still looking fresh. Great grip. No flats so far (touch wood). Not much weight penalty.
Oh wait - there's a Lithion 3 - who knew!!
I’m considering boycotting riding with anyone who has GP4000’s they seem a bit fragile.
I like (for all year really):
GP4 seasons, nice but can delaminate.
Mich Lithion, nice tyres just down on absolute grip.
Bontrager R3, my new fave.
and I had some very nice mid price Conti’s once which could have been the GT’s not sure.
I dont like:
Durano plus, dead as a doormouse.
Marathons, level on a sporting bike
4000’s puncture fest.
What about tyre width? With suitable clearance for your frame and fork, a wider tyre will increase the contact patch, which is beneficial over winter.
Kryton, what’s causing the punctures you’re getting?
GP4000’s they seem a bit fragile.
That would be me 🙂 They are my winter tyre and I don’t have any problem other than the occasional flint cut that would kill most tyres.
what’s causing the punctures you’re getting
Sharp pieces of gravel or flint on normal Herts/Essex country roads.
Piece's of flint on road's, shirley?
#catapostrophe
However, there are no tyre's that can cope with flint cut's. Except perhaps solid one's, like Tannus (spl?).
Not a clue how effective it is, but I saw this tyre liner tape the other day while interweb-window-shopping...

Spent about three weeks so far this winter riding over all the shite from the freshly cut hedgerows. That normally sees at least one puncture, but not had one yet. Was surprised. Pro 4 Endurance 28mm's.
I had pro 4 endurance V1 before and wore them out. The V2 is on twin pack special at various places,, althought Planet X have Lithon 3 at £13 each.
Somehow ive got it into my head i shouldnt have a smooth tread but i know thats rubbish.
I use Specialized Roubaix 28/30 size . No punctures in the last 2 years including Lejog with a section up from Pitlochrie up to Dalwhinnie on the cycle path alongside the A9 that would have been a challenge to get through on a Cyclocrosser . Seem to roll , grip and corner Ok too . Just don't run them at 95psi .
GP4 Season - grippy enough and long lasting. One puncture last winter (October to March).
Challenge Paris Roubaix. I love them.
I've been quite impressed by Michelin Endurance 4s. They seem a bit tougher than the GP4000s they replaced but still acceptable performance wise. They survived last winter anyway.
GP4’s for me.
Schwalbe G-One Speed run tubeless.
Paves have been good for me. Now discontinued
Duranos do well on puncture resistance
GP4 Seasons are hateful things that feel like riding on hosepipe.
Gatorskins - given the above I can only imagine how bad these might be!
The V2 is on twin pack special at various places,,
Yeh, that's it really. They were about fifteen cheaper for two than the Continentals when I bought some.
Well. Ribble has the Conti Grand Prix GT Black Chilli for £23.50, so I got 2 of those.
I like the feel of the GP 4000 2's I have on the Summer 50's which clinched* the deal.
*see what I did there...
Marathon Plus if you really can't face the nightmare of a puncture on the inward leg of the commute. Yes they are weaker in other areas in comparison to rivals, but to suit #1 in your criteria there is simply no comparison.
Marathon pluses weigh an actual metric sh1t tonne. I like them, own two sets but they're grim performance wise.
Cracked out the GP4seasons 28c last night for a wet ride in the dales, they are so much better in the wet than the Schwalbe Ones I use in summer which have started to spin out on steep greasy climbs.
Durano race guard would be my choice if on any kind of budget. Reasonable weight and grip, decent puncture resistance and fastish rolling.
Marathon Plus - Bulletproof but way too heavy
Marathon Supreme - Brilliant, long lasting, expensive though
Gatorskins - Pretty puncture proof, not that comfortable
Durano Plus - Good protection, dead feeling
Rubino Pro 3 - The best so far, light, spin up quickly comfortable, not available any more.
Yep Durano Raceguard here too. 28's are ~250g and in 6k miles I've had two punctures; a screw and a big shard of glass. They're ace. I managed to get 5k miles out of the first pair.
