I have what appears to be some no name brand wheels which came with my road bike so looking to upgrade them but on a budget. I have seen some fulcrum racing quattro's which come just about in budget but my overall knowledge of road wheels is limited. Its fair to say i am assuming the bigger the price the better the wheel but i know that doesnt always ring true so wondered if anyone could make some suggestions for me to look in to. I havent weighed my current set but i think its safe to assume they are big pieces of pig iron so any wheels are going to be lighter.

Fulcrums are decent wheels. I have a set on my trail bike. Only problem is they can be a little hard to get spares for (spokes / freehubs). Not impossible but your LBS will have to order them in.

@devash

Aren't the spares for fulcrum wheels quite expensive?

I'm not trying to pick holes here but...

I have what appears to be

can you check, some OEM wheels are actually OK

I havent weighed my current set but i think its safe to assume they are big pieces of pig iron

as above, can't hurt to check, you might have some semi-decent hoops with cheap tyres, or heavy hubs light rims, or heavy rims and light hubs.

looking to upgrade them

why? not saying you shouldn't, just some idea of motivation would be helpful, ie: want lighter, want stiffer, curtrent ones worn out etc.

Its fair to say i am assuming the bigger the price the better the wheel

within reason yes, but depends what specifically you are after, ie: weight/stiffness/durability, expense generally improves one or more of those things but not necessarily the same thing on different models at the same price.

What kind of riding do you do? Race? Audax? Commute? Touring?

Need comfort for very long rides or will a super stiff Race wheel be better?

Is repairability with standard parts important or will factory wheels be ok?

Assuming you need Shimano compatible freehub and not Campag?

is the colour important to you? 😉

Clarifying you requirements will help drive the recommendations better.

Ok some more info to help with the advice. The bike was only £450 new and i can assure you the wheels are not light or stiff and are typically what you would expect from a bike in this price range even though it was heavily discounted. I am looking for something that is lighter and stiffer but as my rides are typically between 30-90 miles a little comfort wouldnt go amiss. I do all of my own repairs so i am thinking fulcrum wheels may not be the way to go. Do these special spokes relate to the whole of the fulcrum range. I mainly ride for fitness/fun and charity events but lets just say i have a healthy competitive spirit and thus like to push myself frequently and challenge others so would like to add some more quality to my stead. Would like to do some racing next year and more sportifs.

Mavic Aksium's are worth considering. £197 from CRC, and imo they look pretty good too as a bonus 🙂

Bombproof too, been abusing one for 5 years now, still going strong. I think they'd also seem pretty light compared to what you have, but I wouldn't call them light in the grand scheme of things.

Pro bike kit have some good deals on wheels at the moment
Shimano RS21, RS31 or RS11 wheel sets are all under £130.
You can get an extra 10% off if it's your first order with them as well

Don't quote me but I think the freehubs are about £20 more than the Hope ones but apart from that I'm not sure.

I've only done about 600 miles on my set (Red Power XL) so not sure what the cost is going to be when things need replacing. They seem pretty bomb-proof for a £250 wheelset though (I only paid €140 from Bike Discount).
