We’re off to the Lake District in a few weeks and will be taking the mountain bikes. We’ll have our small terrier (Taz) with us and trying to think of ways we can safely carry him on the mountain bike so he can join us on longer rides and can hitch a lift when his paws get tired! We’ll be going off road so don’t think a trailers an option. Does anyone have any tried and tested solutions? Thanks for your help!

I saw a guy riding around the peak District once whose border terrier clung onto his backpack on the road then ran on the trail. It was incredible.

How heavy is he? I transport our Dachshund/Jack Russell cross in a Rixen Kaul front dog basket. The basket only holds up to 7kg because its klickfix but I've got it on top of a front rack to support it.

If this link works then you can see it...

What could possibly go wrong?

If it's a small-ish dog, one of these might work:

Selection of things available from Holland Bike Shop, you can probably find them from UK based shops too:

Ordinary basket could work.
When I was a kid a shepherd lived 2 doors down and his sheepdog used to travel in an old milk crate on the back of his Honda C90, spinning in circles, barking and nipping at everything as they went past.

A friend has one of those rucsac set ups for off road.

On her hybrid for road rides, the dog goes in a basket on the front, secured by a harness. Apparently this was held to be legal in her local club downhill/coasting competition last year and they won the ladies title!

I have one of the buddy riders on my hardtail and I’ve taken Jess (dachshund / Jack Russell cross 11kg) on the Pennine Bridleway but I wouldn’t really do much more hardcore stuff on it. I like the way her ears flap on descents and she likes being at the front, princess of all she observes.

How does a cross between a Dachshund and a Jack Russell end up at 11kg?

Did a tt last year and one of the competitors was a guy with a dog in a basket!

Dog didn't have aero helmet or skin suit so I think slowed him down a bit, but both looked to be having fun!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. The fairdale dog rack made me chuckle! Taz is terrier cross dachsund funny enough. I’ll look into a basket but in the mean time will find our biggest rucksack and wedge him in and see whether he’ll tolerate it.

Please film it, in case he doesn't "tolerate" it 🤣

duncancallum thanks very much for the offer. I’d take you up on it just to see his little ears flapping in the breeze but we’re down in Devon. I did look at the buddy rider website, looks ace but a bit out of reach price wise for us. We’re going to try and do a backpack test ride tomorrow so will see how that goes!

Tried this with our miniature dachshund round Rutland water in the summer. Made it all of 5km and he was going nuts trying to escape. Ended up putting the pack on my front and cycling one handed with my arm in the pack pinning him down. Not a relaxing experience I care to repeat.

I did the Great Divide years ago (98) on a tandem, when we decided to get a dog as an early warning for bears at night, we ended up with an Aussie shepherd puppy. Got a wooden box made by a carpenter and he sat in that on the rear rack. On the climbs he ran alongside us, on the fast bits he got in the box and on the really fast bits he sat in a daysack for extra security!
He was rubbish at the 🐻 part, spent the whole night lying on his back in the tent, feet in the air, snoring...

I did think about digging out the baby bjorn. The indignity though... couldn’t do it to the boy. Happybiker sounds like a great adventure!

Tie a fox brush on to the frame somewhere and just let him hang on by his jaw?

Just wang him as far in front of you as you can, hope he doesn't move, pedal till you reach him then wang him again. Extra points between the two of you see who can chuck him the farthest, be fair about who's chucking him when going downhill as they'll probably win.
